What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?!

What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s “Tapped,” RVA Magazine’s go to weekly craft beer column where you can find all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals and all the booze news your little hearts desire.

Our cup is overflowing with news this week, but first head over here to check out what awesome brews were released in Richmond last weekend.

We have a beer anniversary, new releases, and Kentucky Derby and Mother’s Day celebrations packed into this week’s Tapped so hold on to your mugs because we’re about to tap this thing! And a special collaboration brew with RVA Mag and Legends!

Legend will have beer and food specials for Mother’s Day on Sunday. RVA Mag also has a special collaboration brew with Legend’s and Ellwood Thompson’s that we will tap May 6th at Ellwood’s at 5 pm. The Purple People Eater Pale Ale is Legend’s pale ale infused with organic purple sweet potatoes and local summer thistle honey from Golden Angels Apiary in Glen Allen. Be there to try it with us on Friday!

And this was brewed right around the time of Prince’s passing, so in tribute we give you…Purple Rain:

Garden Grove will release its “Bittersweet Marriage” on Saturday, a collaboration brew with Upchurch Chocolate Company. The porter was given a healthy dose of chocolate malts and has flavors reminiscent of a bitter dark chocolate bar. Another layer of chocolate flavor was added by conducting a three-day cold soak with Upchurch Chocolate Company’s house roasted, fair trade, Madagascar chocolate beans. Yum!

And on Friday head down to the Carytown brewery to meet with some adoptable dogs from Pixie’s Pen Pals. Say hi to Boo, Cassie, and Ben Big from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

There a couple sweet events going on over at Ashland brewery Center of the Universe this weekend. Saturday is their 4th Annual Kentucky Derby Bash. The brewery will have live music from The Phipps, food trucks, charitable wagering, and a ladies hat contest. COTU will also have commemorative metal derby cups to fill with Kentucky Kolsch (our Slingshot Kolsch infused with lime and mint). All wagering on the races benefits CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation.

On Sunday is their second annual Mother’s Day brunch. There will be live music, a special brunch prepared by Kava Kava Gourmet food truck, MOMosas, and more!

Hardywood will release its Bourbon Cru this Saturday May 7th, an abbey-style quadrupel aged in bourbon barrels.

Isley is celebrating Cinco De Mayo tomorrow with beer and tacos, what else? They will be pouring a special Cilantro Lime Plain Jain Infusion and serving up some grub from Intergalactic tacos. 4-9pm. The Scott’s Addition brewery is bringing back its Bourbon Smores Porter this Friday so if you didn’t get a chance to try it last weekend, make sure you get down there!

On Saturday, Triple Crossing will release its Snaketail Ale. dry-hopped Session IPA was brewed to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Virginia Natural Heritage Program. Their scientists discovered the rare St. Croix Snaketail Dragonfly right here in Downtown Richmond on the banks of the James River.

Lickinghole Creek will release their Fearnought brew and host a Derby Day party on Saturday. The Goochland brewery will have horse back rides and derby day hat making for the kids. And for the adults, they will have Fearnought, a bourbon Barrel Imperial Brown Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels for four months.

The Answer Brewpub is celebrating one year of beer this Friday and Saturday. They will have ive music, limited release guest beers, and of course an anniversary beer brewed by the one and only Brandon Tolbert. Check out the Facebook link above for guest beers released on Friday and Saturday they will tap their 1 year anniversary beer, She Bangin’, a 10 percent Triple IPA brewed with Mosaic & Amarillo.

On Sunday, Strangeways Brewing will honor all the mothers out there will its Sweet Southern Mother’s Day event. They’re serving southern fare from Mama J’s and will have live music, activities for the kids and of course beer.
