Benefit For Carver Promise, feat. Well$pnt, Sundream, Lennon Does Loops, Soul Burst at Strange Matter

by | Apr 25, 2018 | EVENTS

Please join us for a show to benefit The Carver Promise on Monday, April 30th with performances by Well$pnt, Sundream, Lennon Does Loops, and Soul Burst. There also will be a silent auction featuring art and goodies from local artists and businesses, as well as a zine table. If you have an item or artwork you would like to donate to the auction or you are a mentor at Carver who would like to share your experiences with the program at the event, please contact me directly.

The Carver Promise is a Communities In Schools program that provides weekly educational support to 350 1st-5th grade students at Richmond’s George Washington Carver Elementary, a low-resource school in our community. The students are paired with mentors attending area colleges who help them with reading, math, and other academic skills, but who also spend time with them playing games and creating art. The most important part of the mentoring is the relationship that’s developed, as when this relationship is robust, it often leads to improved attendance, increased academic performance, and an overall better investment in both short and long-term educational goals.

Communities In Schools is a national drop out prevention program and they have programing in 45 public schools in Richmond including elementary, middle and high schools. Carver Promise is one of the many programs that Communities In Schools fosters and, although it is highly successful, they rely a great deal on volunteers and donations. Some of the items my service-learning students at VCU noticed the program could use are updated books featuring more diverse characters, new board games, and new arts and crafts for the mentoring room. There will be a box to collect donations at the show (the ask list will be posted soon), but the $5 cover for the show will go directly to the program as well. They rely on community help and this is your community.
