Winter 2016

by | May 25, 2017

After a year of illustrious issues, RVA Magazine  looks to finish out 2016 with its strongest issue to date: RVA #27 , hitting newsstands all across the city and surrounding suburbs in early December.

With stories, profiles, and displays brought to you by the people who live, breathe, and fuel Richmond’s vibrant community, this is your best chance to keep abreast of Virginia’s darling capital and the ever-changing scenes that provide its strong identity.

RVA #27’s cover story is a look at the inventive work of artist Greg “Craola” Simkins  after his recent showcase at the Virginia Museum Of Contemporary Art, brought to you by our creative director R. Anthony Harris. Staff writer Shannon Clearly has all the details on Antiphons , the quirky new quartet turning heads in Richmond and across the nation as they gear up for the release of their first full length record on local label Citrus City Records .

Speaking of local labels, Laura Confer takes a look at Bad Grrrl Records, home to local bands such as Atta Girl, Veery, and The Wimps, and their focus on collaborative cassette releases that has expertly shed light on new pockets of the Richmond music scene. Local journalist and musician Davy Jones will provide his Local Recording Guide  as he walks readers through the process of recording music in town and the many choices available to young musicians, while staff writer Cody Endres chats with metal group Unsacred as they return with new music following 2014’s strong debut, False Light. Over in hip-hop, Joseph Genest profiles rising hip-hop star Ver$ace  whereas on the rock side, print editor Doug Nunnally has a look at The Head And The Heart’ s strong Richmond foundation.

Joining these in-depth stories and profiles is our distinguished and anticipated coverage of craft beer, recording news, and music reviews as well as our beloved & stirring photography series that showcases the work of talented local artists. Coming this December, RVA #27  is your guide.

I created Richmond, Virginia’s culture publication RVA Magazine and brought the first Richmond Mural Project to town. Designed the first brand for the Richmond’s First Fridays Artwalk and promoted the citywide “RVA” brand before the city adopted it as the official moniker. I threw a bunch of parties. Printed a lot of magazines. Met so many fantastic people in the process. Professional work: www.majormajor.me
