We’ve been telling you about the impending release of the new Black Girls album, Claire Sinclaire, for a while now. We’ve been telling you about the impending release of the new Black Girls album, Claire Sinclaire, for a while now. They released that dramatic video teaser with the burning organ back in January, and ever since, we’ve been looking forward to hearing what these self-described snuff rockers have come up with. Well, the wait is almost over–this Saturday at Balliceaux, the group will release Claire Sinclaire into the world with a wild rock n’ roll party featuring special guests Sleepwalkers and DJ Rattan. But we do have one thing to share with you today–not an album track but a special B-side that’s available for free download this week only from Bandcamp!

“Surf Engine” is an instrumental driven by a dexterous lead guitar line, therefore resembling the instrumental music that was ubiquitous in surf music’s early-60s heyday. However, while the structure certainly explains the choice of title, “Surf Engine”‘s overall sound is far from being a Ventures retread. Instead, it has a modern flavor that if anything shows influence from the 90s alternative music explosion–there’s clearly a touch of Pixies influence here, as well as a flavor reminiscent of the early 00s “rock revival” spearheaded by the Strokes. In the end, though, the main ingredient of “Surf Engine” is upbeat, catchy fun. As soon as it ends, you’ll want to start it all over again. It’s available this week only as a free download from Black Girls’ Bandcamp page, so grab your copy now!

The Claire Sinclaire release party kicks off at 10 PM this Saturday, March 8, at Balliceaux (203 N. Lombardy St). Black Girls’ set of brand new tunes will be bookended by an opening set from local power-pop quartet Sleepwalkers and a closing set of great tunes to dance to provided by DJ Rattan. And of course, Black Girls will have copies of Claire Sinclaire for sale on CD and limited-edition cassette (with bonus tracks). Look for new t-shirt designs as well. And if you can’t make the show, the new album will also be hitting iTunes, Bandcamp, and other major online retailers on Saturday, complete with B-sides like “Surf Engine” and more! Admission is $10, and of course, bring some extra cash for albums and merch. We’ll see you there!
