Burt AllWyld, Hotboii VL, 249Ballout & Corey2x: Yo! Hip Hop RVA

by | Nov 30, 2023 | MUSIC

Despite what the critics say, this week’s edition of YO! HIP HOP RVA proves trap and drill music aren’t monolithic. Burt AllWyld croons and raps over a moody sound bed while Hotboii VL, 249Ballout and Corey2x deliver menacing raps over thumpy production. The diversity in delivery amongst this week’s featured artists capsize the lazy labels thrust upon these pigeonholed subgenres. Don’t believe me? Take a listen for yourself.

Burt AllWyld – “Catch a Homicide” (single)

Somber trap records—trap ballads if you will—have a special place in my heart, and boy, does Burt AllWyld have a special one with “Catch a Homicide.” The Petersburg native raps about the lengths one’s circle will go to prove their loyalty…as far as “catching” a homicide. The infectious hook is an earworm and Burt’s raspy, melodic voice pierces through DVS’ minimalist yet effective production. This trap ballad has already racked up several plays and I will continue to run it up. Follow Burt AllWyld here.

Hotboii VL – “1st Day Out” (single)

Hotboii VL’s “1st Day Out” is a notable addition to the pantheon of “First Day Out” records. You can hear the hunger in Hotboii VL’s delivery as he relentlessly barrels through this boomy 808-laden track. The family, friends and fans head bobbing along and dancing in the video add another layer of energy to Hotboii VL’s already high-octane flow. He undoubtedly made “The Nawf” proud with this one. 249Ballout & Corey2x – “5 Deep” feat. Luh Jigga, MoneyTeamKari, & TavyAR (single)

As the track title states, “5 Deep” features five rappers poised to make the next East End drill anthem. The five featured on the track each have their singular delivery and flow. But the chemistry is uncanny. Luh Jigga leads with the baton and seamlessly exchanges to 249Ballout, then to MoneyTeamKari, Corey2x, TavyAR, and back to Luh Jigga to bring it down the home stretch. This record slaps and I’m excited to see the traction it will continue to garner (the video premiered on Nov. 29 and has almost surpassed 2,000 views). Give the fellas a follow on Instagram: 249Ballout, Corey2x, Luh Jigga, MoneyTeamKari and TavyAR.
