VCU will soon be back in session, and students and even non-students living in the area will need a pick me up this weekend.

Luckily, The Broadberry is hosting a bevy of cool local bands on Saturday to get your feet tapping and take away those back to school blues.

Headlining is Southern rock/roots band Big Mama Shakes who according to vocalist/drummer Chandler Matkins will have some new music for you fans as well as some other surprises.

“Those at the show will get insight into what’s coming up very soon with Big Mama Shakes,” Matkins said. “This includes winter tour dates, and an exciting announcement for our Richmond folk.”

In April, we spoke with vocalist/guitarist Brady Heck just before the band’s If I Try release so we’re excited to see what they’ve been working on.

Also set to perform is indie rock group Clair Morgan, which just released their new record New Lions And The Not Good Night via Egghunt Records in May. Check out our review of it here.

My Darling Fury and Dharma Bombs fill out the rest of the bill so this is going to be one killer show. Now down to a trio, RVA’s indie pop group My Darling Fury will be an interesting show as they’ve started to shift to a more electronic sound. In March, we spoke to them before their latest EP release, Aches.

Finally, local Appalachian folk band Dharma Bombs splendidly fuse together swing, blues and folk so there’s a little something for everything at this show. You can check out our interview with the band, and their latest EP, Bird Dog Basement Tapes, here.

The Broadberry’s “Back to School Night” show kicks off this Saturday, Aug. 20. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
