Cassette Store Day may not have as much hype as Record Store Day, but for the true believers in quirky physical format music releases, it’s just as important–and way less crowded! Cassette Store Day may not have as much hype as Record Store Day, but for the true believers in quirky physical format music releases, it’s just as important–and way less crowded! Cassette Store Day 2014 will take place this Saturday, and Hoax Hunters will be releasing a special edition of their new album, Comfort & Safety, to celebrate. Like me, I’m sure some of you are big enough fans of tapes to make the very existence of this release in this format reason enough to buy, but for those among you who are still on the fence, there’s a powerful inducement in favor of buying this tape–it will include a bonus download of Hoax Hunters’ covering Husker Du’s “New Day Rising.”

This version of “New Day Rising” was recorded during a live radio session on WRIR in August, and is absolutely scorching–fitting for one of Husker Du’s rawest, most intense tracks. Hearing PJ Sykes scream the song’s title over and over as he slashes at his distorted guitar is an invigorating experience, and makes me realize that all along, mid-period Husker Du was probably the comparison I should have been reaching for when trying to explain Hoax Hunters as a band. You just don’t hear this kind of thing enough these days, so thank goodness Hoax Hunters are bringing this sound back. Hear their “New Day Rising” cover below for a limited time only, and get stoked to pick up Comfort & Safety on cassette this Saturday (copies will be available at Steady Sounds and Vinyl Conflict).

In celebration of their new tape, Hoax Hunters will be playing a free show at Bandito’s Sunday night with The Awesome Few. The show will mark drummer James O’Neill’s last performance with Hoax Hunters. From here on in, he’ll be focusing on The Snowy Owls, who are in the process of finishing up their long-awaited new album. Come see James pound the skins for Hoax Hunters one last time, and of course, pick up a tape! And maybe some Bandito’s nachos… god, I love those things. For more info about the show, click here.
