Suburban District – Beer For Breakfast (Self-Released)

Suburban District is a trio of emcees (Octavion Xcellence, Tim Porter, and Derek Fair) that can make anyone get up from their seats, hit the dance floor, go to the bar, and do other extra-curricular things that they may forget the next morning–and then do it all over again. Their new album, Beer For Breakfast , a year in the making, dropped June 12th. They have had RVA’s ears to the streets anticipating this release, with preview singles such as “Candy Flip” and “Exclamation Point.” The group has recently been playing countless local shows, opening for popular national acts such as Big Sean and Flo-Rida, and it seems that nothing can stop them.

The album starts off with a straight-to-the-point song called ”Hello x Goodbye,” in which they give the ladies a choice–say hello, or say goodbye. The next track is a simple drum pattern with a hypnotizing tone called “You Win,” the title of which they chant throughout the track. The song “Exclamation Point” features emcee Conrizzle, who is also the producer of this song and plenty of other tracks on the album. This is a perfect party tune, and definitely one of my favorite tracks. “Bleachers,” a track featured in their video “When Girls Kiss Girls x Bleachers,” tells everyone to “have fun watching from the bleachers,” implying that Suburban District are in the game while others are on the sidelines.

“Raw” is exactly what the title suggests. The guitar sample and hard-edged drums capture you as they tell everyone their tagline and motto, “Pay us in weed, beer, liquor, and virgins.” The next song, “Candy Flip,” describes the mixture of two different types of extra-curricular activities. I won’t go into detail about the lyrical content, but I will say I definitely had the chorus stuck in my head. “Not My Fault” changes the tone a little, talking about how people get tied into a relationship despite the ups and downs. “The Law,” which features emcee Nickelus F and DC native Scolla, is nothing but the refrain “bars” with a banging drum pattern. “Slow Down” ends the album with an ambient tone and an upbeat vibe. The idea behind this track is to basically tell everyone that the group works hard and can’t be slowed down. From what I see, this is a very true fact.

Dropping this album eight days before summer begins is pure genius in my eyes. With an album full of party songs, how could you go wrong? This will be one of those albums you hear playing a lot around VCU this summer. I just hope they don’t make RVA wait so long for the next one. Suburban District is definitely the new wave, and on Beer For Breakfast, they show us what the suburbs can bring to hip hop.
