Southern California’s Sun Araw delivers a dubbed-out handful of moist psychedelic island sounds. There are a lot of “tropical sounds” and “washed out” beach vibes pervading some new music lately, sometimes only pronouncing those traits in low opacity cover art, but this Sun Araw actually sounds like tripping out on the lysergic coconut cream stuck between your teeth, lost in the humid expanses of an ancient echo machine. Dub basslines that don’t reek of white boy reggae, more just a heady bounce amidst an excursion of electric reverb. This record is two cuts of spaced out percussive psych dub, heavy on a very wet tone throughout provided drops of space funk guitar wah bursts. Not Not Fun has been on a roll lately with the spaced-out echo jams; so far “Sun Ark” cut comes close to an honest homage to the heady Jamaican dub records of yore through the white punk California liquid sunshine. – J.
