Gravel Soaked Whisky: Weedeater at Richmond Music Hall

Weedeater isn’t here to gently persuade you—they’re here to erase your existence from the inside out, a frontal assault of the auricular. Over two decades into their bourbon-fueled, smoke-shrouded descent through stoner-metal chaos, the North Carolina trio unleashed a deafening set at Richmond Music Hall on Tuesday night. In just one hour, they settled one of life’s great mysteries once and for all: mankind is indeed, unkind, man.

Born from the same southern sludge cauldron that spawned Eyehategod and Buzzov•en, Weedeater still stands defiantly apart—less a band than a grotty, relentless wall of distortion, fuzz, and noise. Their music isn’t something you just listen to; it’s something you endure, a tuberculosis you willingly consume—gleefully. Albums like God Luck and Good Speed and Jason… the Dragon aren’t just vinyl staples; they’re dirt-encrusted scripture, a biblical testament to the depraved union of swampy blues and savage doom-metal.

If you’ve yet to experience the audible punishment that is Weedeater (check our playlist below—you’ve been warned), frontman “Dixie” Dave Collins is a devastating force of nature. With vocals that sound like gravel soaked in cheap whiskey, his stage presence is equal parts preacher and madman, cutting through crushing baselines and guttural howls with the twisted charm of a Baptist revival. Alongside guitarist Dave “Shep” Shepherd and drummer Ramzi Ateyeh, the band conjures a sound so thick and heavy, you can practically chew through it.

The real magic of Weedeater isn’t just their heaviness, that’s a given. It’s their raw, unfiltered presence and deep connection to an underground that refuses to die. Watching them tear apart Richmond Music Hall after showing up an hour late wasn’t just wistfulness; it was a reclamation of all things unholy. A godless ritual. Would bands like Windhand, Primitive Man, or even High on Fire have found their way without Weedeater carving a scortched path ahead of them? Debatable. What’s not debatable is Weedeater’s status as the elder statesman of heavy, grimy groove. A perfect example of how to stay mercilessly abrasive (and stoned) while never losing sight of the joyfully absurd spirit that pushes them to keep grinding year after year.
