Hit us up with local hip hop!

by | Mar 31, 2010 | MUSIC

Hip-Hop in RVA is a special niche. It’s something that’s been here for a long time right below the surface. The scene has been building slowly and almost silently while other genres have taken the main stage. With exceptions like Skillz and De’Angelo, RVA hasn’t had a lot of commercial recognition in the Rap and R&B game. This column is here to acknowledge what’s happening with real Hip-Hop music and culture going on right now. Just in time for those spring/summer bbq’s, cookouts and block parties, I’ll do my best to bring you the skinny on the newest and illest listening pleasures.

I want to bring to you the names to watch out for, who to be checking out and what albums to be spending your skrilla on.

This monthly column wont be strictly limited to RVA but family comes first. I want to give love to our local artists first and foremost. Ill keep you up on the much-respected talent that’s outside of our city too, don’t stress on that. With so much noise on the dials these days, I’ll weed thru all the ish and drop just the science for you. I hope to have contributors as well to help me along the way. As they say, no man’s an island. It takes all us to make things happen in this city. So def send me info on who you think we should all be rocking. My ears are open.

I created Richmond, Virginia’s culture publication RVA Magazine and brought the first Richmond Mural Project to town. Designed the first brand for the Richmond’s First Fridays Artwalk and promoted the citywide “RVA” brand before the city adopted it as the official moniker. I threw a bunch of parties. Printed a lot of magazines. Met so many fantastic people in the process. Professional work: www.majormajor.me

Timmy Danger and Punks for Presents Wrestle for Charity

I found Timmy Danger lounging casually beside a fire pit, drinking a dark beer. It was a Friday afternoon in the dying days of summer, and the man whose last name is "Danger" was looking decidedly docile. He greeted me with a warm smile and a firm handshake wearing...
