Lightfields has been hanging around the fringes of the Richmond scene for a few years now, constantly tweaking their sound while going through a number of lineup changes. However, things appear to have solidified for the local quintet, and the maturation that’s occurred is obvious on new single “Junior.” A preview of their upcoming album of the same name, “Junior” is based around upbeat, guitar-driven riffs and a singalong chorus that will stick in your head all day.

The band’s once-again revamped lineup brings in third guitarist Daniel Carlisle, who fills the spot in the band’s lineup previously occupied by a saxophone player. This seems like a good move from our perspective, allowing Lightfields to focus on influences from bands like Dinosaur Jr and Superchunk, which their press release credits as “band favorites.” Granted, guitar-based rock that draws from the sounds of the early 90s is on the upswing right now, but a move into a crowded genre doesn’t have to be a bad idea for a band–and with songwriting this memorable, it’s definitely a good move for Lightfields. Stream “Junior” below, or grab a name-your-price download copy from Lightfields’ Bandcamp page.

The album from which “Junior” is taken was recorded earlier this year by Daniel Deckelman of Snake Oil Recording. The band have still not set a release date for Junior (the album), but they will be playing next Thursday, April 10, at Gallery 5, along with Houdan The Mystic and Red States. The show starts at 7 PM, and as of now, the price is yet to be determined. For more info, click here.
