Many of 20th century Japan’s cultural exports have been described as weird, bizarre, even downright disturbing in some cases. But thanks to Osaka Monaurail, we can now add funky to the list.

This octet from Osaka, Japan has transcended their college band roots to become one of the world’s funkiest funk orchestras.

United by a love of jazz, Osaka Monaurail formed in 1992, deriving their name from funk single “It’s the J.B. Monaurail” by the J.B.s, combined with their alma mater, Osaka University.

Since then, the band has taken their music all over the world, including shows in Europe, Australia, and Canada. They have performed with legends of funk and soul, including former James Brown Funky Diva Marva Whitney, as well as trombonist Fred Wesley (formerly of the JB Horns & Parliament/Funkadelic).

They have recorded several studio and live albums, with August’s Riptide: and Other Readings from the Book of Funk being their most recent release.

And now, Osaka Monaurail will be bringing its own particular brand of funk to Richmond, VA. Thursday, Oct. 30, Osaka Monaurail will play at Strange Matter as part of the band’s first U.S. Tour, presented by Soulpower and featuring Soulpower’s own DJ Pari and Mr. Felty. Doors open at 9PM, admission is $10.
