You may not recognize Todd Herrington’s name right away, but if you follow the RVA music scene at all, you know his work. You may not recognize Todd Herrington’s name right away, but if you follow the RVA music scene at all, you know his work. The talented bassman holding down the bottom end for The Big Payback, Mekong Xpress, the DJ Williams Projekt, and more, Herrington finally stepped to the front of the stage last year for his solo debut, Things. Funded by a Kickstarter campaign, Things was originally intended to be a CD-only release, but the Kickstarter was so successful that a vinyl release was added to the plans. Now, a year after the album’s original release, the limited edition 180-gram vinyl has arrived, and Todd Herrington will be celebrating its arrival with an evening of music, dancing, and fun tonight at The Broadberry!

Things was widely celebrated upon its original release back in 2013; our own Shannon Cleary placed it in his top 10 RVA releases of 2013, calling it “one of the more ambitious releases this city saw this year.” It’s true–Herrington seems to have called in every favor he had outstanding in the entire city, bringing in a wide-ranging crew of nearly two dozen local musicians to create the sounds that make up Things in all its glory.

The album cruises through multiple sounds and styles over the course of its 10 songs, always returning to Herrington’s jazz/funk foundation but ranging further from this base than you might expect. “I wanted the record to feel like a mix tape you might make for yourself, or the ipod on shuffle while you were driving over a long distance,” Herrington tells us. “It’s diverse, but cohesive.” Members of No BS! Brass Band, Bio Ritmo, Carbon Leaf, the Spacebomb band, and many more all contribute to the fascinating final product, which was created and assembled at some of the best studios in town, including Minimum Wage, Montrose, and Millwright Sound.

And it must have been a really fun time, because a lot of those same musicians who helped bring Things into the world will be joining Todd Herrington tonight at The Broadberry to recreate their roles in this music. With over a dozen musicians planning to join in the headlining performance, and opening sets by Kenneka Cook and DJ Harrison on the wheels of steel, this should be an evening of amazing sounds from beginning to end! For only $7, you can be part of the celebration–AND you can pick up your very own vinyl copy of Things, which comes complete with a digital download card, so you can load the whole thing onto your iPhone. It all starts tonight at 9 PM at The Broadberry, located at 2729 W. Broad St. For more info, click here.
