Should Richmond Have an Official New Year’s Eve Party?

by | Dec 29, 2023 | COMMUNITY, EAT DRINK, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, RICHMOND NEWS

As we coast into the NYE weekend, let’s ask a question.

Flashback to 2007: our magazine ignited Carytown with back to back DIY New Year’s parties that became a part of the city history. It was super fun. This celebration continued for a few more years, even as we passed the torch to new planners, but never with the same homegrown vibe of the first few years.

However, like all good things, it eventually faded away – maybe due to the tightening grip of city regulations, safety worries from Carytown’s merchants, or the crescendo of neighborhood complaints. Or perhaps it was a cocktail of all these factors.

This slice of our past sparked a thought: Do you want an official Richmond new year’s party? Should city hall take the lead in planning and management of this event? And if so, what corner of our concrete jungle would be the perfect stage for such a party? What do you think?
