The streets are buzzing with whispers of new releases from some of RVA’s favorites, and I’m stuck in the present, waiting for them to drop. The only thing keeping me grounded is the constant rotation of shows at The Camel, Banditos, Gallery5, and beyond.
If you’ve got any tips, send them my way. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Dead Billionaires, Tucker Riggleman and the Cheap Dates, Drug Country
Dead Billionaires are a trio that really knows their way around a melody. Whenever I’ve seen them, they bring so much energy and liveliness to a performance and make the crowd feel like they’re part of something bigger. The punk trio reminds me of The Jam, with a certain sensibility for bringing a song to life.
This is my first experience with Tucker Riggleman and the Cheap Dates, and I’m instantly hooked. They definitely have Appalachian roots, but their sound overflows with the influence of Big Star and Old 97’s. This modernized folk style feels like such a movement right now.
On that topic, we have Drug Country. They first came onto my radar a while ago, and I was instantly blown away by the honesty of it all. I don’t know how else to put it—it’s just honest. Sonically, they fall into that modern wave of updated country/western music.
Overall, this is a really interesting bill.

Homey, Hippie Love Party, Maygemini, Half Chub, Squish, Truck Bed

We’ve got an Imperial Lounge show this weekend, celebrating a ton of recent releases.
Homey is a local lo-fi, almost dreamy, almost shoegaze group with some cool Bandcamp recording out. “Late Night Cable – Miracle Realm“ is probably my favorite of their releases so far, almost reaching into gothy territory.
I’ve had the chance to play with Hippie Love Party once (I believe), and I was blown away by the sheer instrumental talent on display. They can spin together an intricate tune while still making it a face-melting shredder.
The theme of today is Bandcamp, and Maygemini has a duo of catchy yet serious releases. Their recordings are raw and crunchy, and I hope that energy translates live—I love that wall-of-sound style.
Half Chub is also coming off a fresh Bandcamp release, with a handful of hard-hitting tracks. If you’re into that Fat Wreck Chords/Epitaph sound, I think you’ll groove with these guys.
Squish is actually anchored on Spotify, already dropping two releases this year! “Siren” is their debut single, and it is goddamn catchy—my ears hear it as a cross between Minor Threat and Cake, which isn’t a combo I expected to put together.
Truck Bed describes themselves as “noisy emo dreamgaze,” and honestly, I think that does them better justice than I could. Their first release came out just a few weeks ago but has already racked up an impressive few thousand plays. Go give it a listen!

Chandler’s RVA send off w/the family
This will be local rapper Chandler’s biggest show to date, headlining The Broadberry with a stacked lineup of local talent. It’s also being billed as his “last show down South for the foreseeable future,” so expect a packed house for this one.
“The Family” will feature an impressive roster of local heavyweights, including Lunch $pecial, O-Z, TMA, Kaay Taurus, Zuri, DJ Tuffluck, and Fellaair.
Chandler’s shows are always riotous, righteous, and reinvigorating—but this one promises to be the culmination of it all.
NEW TUNES
Servant by White Beast
The newest single from one of Richmond’s hardest-hitting duos descends you into a dark sewer of bass and drums before flashing lights flick on and strafe over you. The song swirls you into an under-empire of distortion and rebellion.
With the release of the single, White Beast dropped a stunning music video featuring 80 feet of pyrotechnics, dozens of extras, and yours truly—slathered in shaving cream. I highly recommend checking out the video and throwing elbows in the pit at their next show.
Your Stupid City by Deathcat
This long-standing Deathcat classic finally gets the high-quality, take-home treatment it deserves. Lyrically, it’s a raw and revealing snapshot of modern youth—full of anxiety, fleeting hope, and endlessly confusing emotions.
The single carries the charm of a ‘50s bubblegum pop record, with a soothing chord progression and an easy-to-sway beat. Alongside the release, they dropped a music video that plays like a coming-of-age story—one that lingers with you long after you’ve outgrown the age itself.
