The Richmond All Star Ozzy Osbourne Tribute
Tuesday, September 16th
Get Tight
This Saturday, September 13, Get Tight Lounge goes full bat-bite as Richmond pays homage to the Prince of Darkness. Sponsored by RVA Mag and Punks for Presents, the night brings an all-star lineup of local singers backed by a powerhouse band tearing through Ozzy and Sabbath classics. Expect crushing riffs, fists-in-the-air sing-alongs, and a everyone howling at the moon. Bonus: every ticket sold supports the Richmond Children’s Hospital. — Tony
Inhaler, Dayfiction
Tuesday, September 16th
The National
Boy, if I ain’t a sucker for an Irish band. Inhaler has made it over. If you’re not familiar, they’re one of the most exciting acts in the world of pop rock right now. They can easily go band-for-band with The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys, and in fact, I dare say they’ve kept a level of soul the others have lacked in recent days.
Inhaler is incredibly honest and balances catchy, poppy tunes with an alternative and more heartfelt delivery. Certain artists have a way of narrating life around you, and Inhaler is one. I’d say we’re quite lucky to get a frontrunner from the booming talent center that is modern Ireland.
I’ll be straightforward with my bias: local post-punkers Dayfiction are dear friends. But honestly, I first felt we should be friends after seeing one of their amazingly electric sets in a packed and dancing backyard. The group caught my eye like no other, and I’ve believed they’re meant for truly great things ever since.
Their newest EP, Diplomat, has taken them to the next level and it’s truly amazing to see something so good come from such an organic, local bunch.
McKinley Dixon, Ducctape Jesus, Zuri
Saturday, September 13th
Richmond Music Hall
“Never won a Grammy, but everyone at my community center knows me.” Damn, tough line.
McKinley Dixon is one of my personal favorite rappers to rise up in Richmond. His delivery is effortless—sometimes that can risk sounding half-hearted, but Dixon is truly effortlessly cool and moving. June and July saw the release of his most recent album and single, both fantastic and full-sounding. His beats are jazzy and light, contrasting beautifully with the edge in his voice. Not to be dramatic, but this is some of the best music to come out of RVA.
Another staple in the local hip hop scene is Ducttape Jesus. His tunes are hard-hitting and heavy, with a delivery to match. His live shows are always a party, with the man himself diving into the crowd, dancing and sweating, creating a raw, ecstatic atmosphere.
Zuri rounds out the bill, and she’s got it down. Her flow is free and unfiltered, shifting seamlessly into mesmerizing, unforgettable choruses. She carries the heart and soul of ’90s R&B—breathtaking instrumentals and undeniable vocals, truly amazing.
Box Factory, The Smirks, Deathcat, Receiver
Saturday, September 13th
The Camel
Box Factory has grown from a group of friends playing fun, dancey music into a powerhouse of psychedelic noise. I’ve never been disappointed by their performances. Every set is piled with mayhem, fun, and chaos—half a dozen or more performers rocking the stage without a care in the world. They’re neon in sound form. When I picture them, it’s flashes of yellow, pink, and green—sporadic and beautiful.
The Smirks are in support, and they’re loads of fun. Their sound is a healthy mix of modern alternative, new wave, and ’60s lighthearted swing. They’re an easy band to hop and jump around to, and they know how to write a damn hypnotic hook that gets stuck in your head.
I’ve also been lucky enough to watch the amazing arc of Deathcat. I remember their early shows—already brimming with great songwriting and expression. Their recent EP was fantastic, and I’m glad they’ve been embraced so openly by the Richmond community for their indie rock sound.
Receiver is the newest band on the bill but has been a nonstop treat since the spring. Their college rock–style tunes are memorable, and though they don’t have anything out yet, I hope you’ll join me in cranking the volume when they do.
Sinister Haze, Crimson Heat, Hagstone
Saturday, September 13th
Gallery 5
Self-described “Southern Doomed Space Rock” outfit Sinister Haze is taking over Gallery5 this week. These are serious rockers who know their way around a fretboard. From what I’ve seen on their social media, they’re delivering wild guitar licks, driving bass, and speed-infused drums. Hopefully, we’ll see some official releases from them soon.
Crimson Heat comes in with plenty of soloing, channeling an ’80s-inspired sound with tough Lemmy-style vocals and heavy, doomy breakdowns. There’s a healthy diversity in their sound, making them a strong act to catch.
Closing out the bill is hard rock outfit Hagstone, reviving that classic rock energy with gritty, powerful vocals. Their guitars keep moving and rocking—always something to grab onto.
New Tunes
“Honeystain” by Tommie’s House
I think we were all deeply saddened by the end of local pop group Lobby Boy, but we should be equally excited for the debut release from vocalist Chez’s new project, Tommie’s House. This first release is stunning, full of mournful, dreamy guitars that slide around like ships on a bay. The song leans into the modern alt-country scene, which has been growing exponentially, while still holding onto pop sensibilities. It’s an absurdly promising start for Chez’s new project, and I can’t wait to hear more. In the meantime, I’ll be blasting Honeystain.
