There is a new generation of hip hop kids in Richmond and we are paying attention.

There is a new generation of hip hop kids in Richmond and we are paying attention. Crawling through cornfields, creeping down Broad Street, roaming the back alleys of the Fan, these young bloods are creating new sounds and videos that matter. Here are a few on our radar – give them a listen and keep sending them our way. Special thanks to Black Liquid.

T.R.E., “On A Mission”

“On A Mission” takes you through the day in the life of T.R.E., a young man dealing with reality and the everyday struggle as an artist trying to make it in this world. No flashy stuff here–we see him in the barber chair, in an abandoned location, and even with a lady friend on the back seat as he rides a bicycle, all the while rhyming in every scene over a mellow instrumental. Teleport Team, “Smokey Like Robinson”

There is so much good hip hop being produced in the RVA area these days. It’s tough to even keep track of it all. Teleport Team make it even more complicated by moving back and forth between RVA and the Hampton Roads area–but every time they show up on my radar, I’m reminded all over again of the talent they’re bringing to their work. Dank D, “Refined Over Time”

Here we have a rough looking Dank D stepping into R.J.’s barber shop to get cleaned up. The haircut in question: a high top fade. The message of the record: the journey that is self improvement and refinement. READ MORE

Segga Spiccoli, “Lord Knows”

What do you get when you put together a guy who seemingly loves the 90’s, footage from Menace II Society, and a beat that sounds like Black Moon? Segga Spiccoli’s “Lord Knows,” from his Life As I Know It mix tape. READ MORE

R. Anthony Harris

R. Anthony Harris

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
