DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist have extended their Renegades of Rhythm tour due to popular demand! They’ll be bringing this turntable extravaganza to The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville on Saturday November 15–and you could be there! DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist are a couple of the most celebrated turntablists on the scene today–and their Renegades of Rhythm tour pays tribute to perhaps the greatest DJ of them all, Afrika Bambaataa, hip hop godfather and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation.

On this tour, with Bambaataa’s blessing, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist will be spinning vinyl pulled entirely from Bambaataa’s collection, attempting to reflect both Bambaataa’s extremely widespread interests and his curator’s eye for the various threads that he brought together to create the sound of hip hop. “His collection includes not just Soul and Rap, but also Soca, Calypso, Dub, Salsa… it’s obvious that this music was important to him, and it’s reflected in his own music,” DJ Shadow said of Bambaataa.

You’ll hear all the ways in which Bambaataa did his pioneering work, through the lens of his record collection. “The program will be multifaceted,” says DJ Shadow. “Bambaataa as artist, exploring the influence of his classics like ‘Planet Rock;’ Bambaataa as collector, and the genre-defining breaks he discovered; and Bambaataa as peacemaker and force for social change. He influenced an entire generation worldwide, so we feel a great obligation to get it right.”

What’s all that mean? Here’s a brief clip that should give you some idea, from the Renegades of Rhythm tour’s stop in Philadelphia on September 6:

…but rest assured, there’ll be plenty more where that came from. With RVA’s own DJ Harrison of Jellowstone Records opening up, this will be a full evening of beats, grooves, and hip hop history. Don’t miss it!
