Electronic music fans should definitely be sitting up and taking notice–this very weekend, San Francisco’s Phutureprimitive will be rolling through RVA, and you could go see him for free courtesy of your pals at RVA Mag! Phutureprimitive, a DJ/producer otherwise known as Rain, is a veteran of the electronic music scene, who has shown some serious staying power over the past decade-plus since releasing debut full-length Sub Conscious in 2004.

Following it up with a series of LPs and EPs, most recently 2013’s Searching For Beauty In The Darkest Places, Phutureprimitive has demonstrated adept control of both blissed-out psychedelic trip hop and the heaviest dubstep drops. His shows are so much more than your standard dance party; in 2013, his first headlining tour featured a collaboration with ritual dancer Caeli La, and audiences were invited to join in an interactive game known as Dance Out Your Demons. After writing a “demon” such as a deep fear or element of their personality they wanted to change on a piece of duct tape, the tape was stuck to the bottom of their foot, and destroyed over the course of the evening.

This sort of mystical healing ritual mixes well with the ambient atmospheres and trippy layers of Phutureprimitive’s music. There’s an overall epic-fantasy vibe that is showcased to excellent effect in the sci-fi-influenced video for “Lucid Dream,” the leadoff single from Searching For Beauty In The Darkest Places. Check it out below:

On Friday at the Broadberry, Phutureprimitive will be joined by several of the leading lights of the local EDM scene to create a full evening of trippy vibes and bass overload–make sure you’re there!
