Another tragic mass shooting occurred yesterday, and like many of you, we find ourselves growing increasingly desensitized to these all-too-frequent events. As members of both the media and the Richmond community, we acknowledge that simply writing another opinion piece isn’t going to make a difference. However, remaining silent is not the answer, so we have chosen to compile and track a list of mass shootings throughout the year.
We present this list of mass shootings, as classified by various sources and defined in this article as incidents involving four or more victims. We have also included links to original reporting by local and state media for your reference.
We encourage you to conduct your own research and contact your local and state representatives to share your thoughts. This list will be updated periodically throughout the year.
Moreover, if you fail to exercise your right to VOTE, you contribute to the problem.
DEFINITION OF MASS SHOOTING
A precise definition of a mass shooting is not universally agreed upon, but it generally involves multiple victims of firearm-related violence. Different organizations use varying criteria, with the nonprofit research group Gun Violence Archive defining a mass shooting as an event where four or more people, excluding the perpetrator(s), are shot in one location at approximately the same time.
Other sources, such as The Washington Post and Mother Jones, have similar definitions but with slightly different criteria.
The crowdsourced Mass Shooting Tracker project has the broadest definition, including any incident where four or more individuals are shot, including the perpetrator. A 2019 study published in Injury Epidemiology proposed a definition that accounts for both fatalities and non-fatal injuries, defining a mass shooting as an event where four or more people, excluding the shooter, are shot in a single incident, regardless of motive, setting, or the number of deaths.
Here are the 2023 US mass shooting statistics by month compiled with the help of Wikipedia.
