RVA Mag TV: With MinuteMade, Arcani Drops Richmond Musicians Into Fantastical Dreamscapes

by | Aug 26, 2022 | FILM & TV, PHOTOGRAPHY

Arcani is a prolific guy. Born Isaiah Carter, the Richmond-based photographer came to RVA from Yonkers, New York when he was in middle school. By his late teens, he was learning to love his new city, which impressed him with its artistic sensibility and unique aesthetic. He was also learning to love photography, and Richmond was a big inspiration for his early work. Other inspirations included video games, anime, and most of all, hip hop.

It’s hip hop he celebrates with his YouTube video series, MinuteMade, currently a part of RVA Mag TV Season 1. True to their name, the MinuteMade videos are only 60 seconds long. They feature rappers, singers, and musicians performing minute-long snatches of their music within computer generated landscapes that feel psychedelic at times and digitally futuristic at others. Arcani records the episodes in front of a green screen, which he originally set up in his living room. These days, though, he’s gone big time, traveling back and forth between RVA and NYC, and building his multimedia brand.

Check out MinuteMade — and everything else RVA Mag TV has to offer — . And check out our quick and easy interview with Arcani below.

R. Anthony Harris: You’re from New York; how’d you end up in Richmond?

Arcani: Born in Yonkers NY. I moved to VA for a better education. I’m an all-around creative with a gigantic imagination.

RAH: How did you get started making content before this?

A: I’ve always listened to music and pictured the craziest made-up scenarios. Ninety percent of the time, I had no idea who the artist was or what they looked like. I started in photography and branched out to music videos and commercials. Then, eventually, MinuteMade.

RAH: How did this project come about? What gave you the inspiration to record performers in front of a green screen?

A: Big dreams and empty pockets. I wanted a lot, but I didn’t necessarily have the budget to create my vision. I created MinuteMade and eventually just built the world I dreamed of using 3D software.

RAH: What has been the best part of making these videos?

A: Watching artist shoot in front of a green screen, then receive a link with the [same] performance, but in a completely different universe. Witnessing their reaction. And just every opportunity they get after it.

RAH: What have you got planned for the rest of the year?

A: Expansion. MinuteMade has been mostly [artists from] Richmond. I plan on going on a tour, starting with the East Coast, and helping artists worldwide fully expose their amazing talents.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Photos | Palm Palm Baptized The Camel in Rock and Glam

You know you’re in the right place when half the crowd looks like they just walked offstage somewhere else. That was the scene last weekend at The Camel. This wasn’t just another local gig—it was a sweat-soaked, whiskey-laced sermon delivered by Palm Palm. J Roddy...

Photos | Maynard James Keenan and the Sessanta Tour in Virginia

A few weeks ago, we talked to Maynard James Keenan about the Sessanta tour — this strange, layered fever dream of a show stitched together with parts of A Perfect Circle, Tool, and Primus. When asked what it all meant, he didn’t blink. “You just do,” he said. No big...

Photos | Remi Wolf Packs Out Richmond With a Wild, Joyful Riot

Last weekend in Richmond, Remi Wolf took Brown’s Island and didn’t give it back. Her sound doesn’t fit in a box — pop, funk, soul, indie — all smashed together and dragged through the dirt. Openly fluid, proudly weird, she’s built a world where you don’t ask...

Photos | Swing, Sweat, Repeat: Caravan Palace at 9:30 Club

Caravan Palace hit 9:30 Club in DC a weeks ago and blew the place open to a packed house. No speeches, no slow build — just lights up, beats heavy, and bodies moving. The French group has made a name twisting swing and electronic into something reckless and alive, and...

Municipal Waste | 25 Years of No Mercy

When you think of Richmond’s heavy music scene, four names immediately come to mind: Lamb of God, GWAR, Avail, and Municipal Waste. These are the bands that have bled into the city’s veins and shaped the sound of this place over the last several decades. And this past...

Styles P Shines, But So Do We

The room was charged the moment the doors opened. Richmond showed up ready—you could feel it in the air, like the bassline of a song you know by heart. And at the center of it all stood The Ghost himself: Styles P. Live at Ember Music Hall. A masterclass in presence,...
