Central Virginia Highland Games will teach you the difference between whisky and whiskey this weekend

There’s lots of reasons to be jazzed for Fall. Halloween, the changing of the leaves, apple picking, pumpkin everything, these are well and good, but if you want to know why I’m jazzed for Fall, it’s because it finally gets chilly enough for dark beer and whisky.

There’s lots of reasons to be jazzed for Fall. Halloween, the changing of the leaves, apple picking, pumpkin everything, these are well and good, but if you want to know why I’m jazzed for Fall, it’s because it finally gets chilly enough for dark beer and whisky.

I’m talking stout and porter, whisky and whiskey, and if you don’t know the difference between whisky and whiskey, then consider attending this year’s Central Virginia Highland Games and Celtic Festival this weekend, where you can sample some of the spirits Britannia has to offer. There’s also loads to do for those who don’t imbibe.

This year’s Festival promises to bring the best in music, food, sport, and spirits from England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland to our fair city. The musically inclined amongst us will have the opportunity to witness competitions in fiddle, harp, song, and, naturally, pipe and drum.

For the athletes, you can get your thrills to the sight of men in kilts throwing very heavy objects at the annual Highland Games. For those keen on team sports with rules and such (what?), this year’s Games will also feature rugby and hurling (look it up).

Of course, it would be outrageous to celebrate the culture and people of the British Isles without eating their food and drinking their drink, and you’ll have the chance to do plenty of both this year.

The beer will be on tap and in the bottle, whichever strikes your fancy. Speaking of fancy, you’ll be the talk of your social circle when you can tell people the difference between whisky and whiskey, which you’ll be able to do after this year’s whisky tasting. And for those not drinking, or for those trying to mitigate the effects of drinking, there will be food aplenty.

Try the haggis!

Take advantage of this perfect weekend, and come to the Central Virginia Highland Games and Celtic Festival, Oct. 22nd and 23rd, at the Richmond International Raceway Complex.

Tickets are available online and at the gate. Check the website for a full calendar of events.
