When the Shockwave first came to Kings Dominion, it was a revolutionary stand-up coaster providing high thrills and a great new attraction to RVA’s closest theme park.
It also hurt like hell and was notorious for getting stuck with people still on the ride.
But hey, it was still a lot of fun, right? No? Well don’t worry, its going away and (hopefully) making room for something better.
“While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to one of our older coasters, we’re excited for what the future holds,” Pat Jones, Vice President and General Manager of Kings Dominion, told CBS 6. “The park has evolved so much over the past 40 years and as Kings Dominion continues to grow, we’re committed to enhancing the overall experience for our guests. We’re happy that Shockwave was able to provide close to three decades of memories.”
Despite my opinion of the ride (maybe its cause I’m 6’2 so my height made my neck more vulnerable to whiplash? ) people loved the massive green beast – this POV video of the ride has almost 300K views.
And, honestly, how many roller coasters get retired? We are not part of a generation that gets to say “I remember when there was a stand up coaster over there” as we pay too much for beer and fight, semi-drunk, for a place in line with an 8-year-old.
Ahh, memories.
