The Record Store Day list of releases is the largest yet, and runs the gamut from Pink Floyd, Rush, and Bruce Springsteen to Mumford & Sons, Lady GaGa and Fleet Foxes. Most of these releases are available exclusively at independent record stores. This year features a number of titles on 10” vinyl and lots of colored vinyl singles. It’s a flashback to Plan 9’s early years in the 1980’s with its new release bins full of colored-vinyl import 12” and DIY punk 45’s. (That’s right- Plan 9 turns 30 later this year!) A link to the complete list can be found at www.plan9music.com, as well as at www.recordstoreday.com . [or you can follow this link to “The List“] The list is long but the pressings are very limited. It’s one-per-customer, first-come-first-served, so collectors will line up before the doors open to get a shot at their must-have titles.

In addition to the limited-edition releases created especially for Record Store Day, many of the record labels have designed free cd samplers, magazine samples, vinyl bags, and t-shirts to be given away to customers while supplies last.

Record Store Day was founded in 2007 as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding independently-owned record stores in the USA and spread to hundreds of similar stores internationally. Now in its fourth year, nearly 2000 stores worldwide unite under the Record Store Day banner to celebrate the unique place they occupy in their music and social communities. Record labels participate by contributing the freebies and the special releases, and bands like Drive-By Truckers, New Politics, Foo Fighters, Regina Spektor, Duran Duran, Del McCoury, Peter Buck, and My Morning Jacket make it a point to play or sign in a store near their gigs on Record Store Day. It’s the ultimate day for music fans.
