RVA On Tap: Carrot Cake & Apple Crumb Brews

Caley Sturgill | November 13, 2019

Topics: ardent, beer, beer column, big pippin cider, bold rock hard cider, Canon And Draw, castleburg brewey and taproom, chesapeake bay distillery, Hardywood, kindred spirit, ko distilling, Legend Brewing, Lickinghole Creek, midnight brewery, RVA On Tap, Starr Hill, Thanksgiving, the answer brewpub, three notchd, triple crossing, truly hard seltzer, Väsen, vintners cellar and winery

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs.

This week, the tastes of Thanksgiving are coming to the River City with Lickinghole Creek’s Carrot Cake beer, Three Notch’d RVA Collab House’s Apple Crumb Ale, and Hardywood’s Apple Brandy GBS. Don’t miss the Stony Point Beer Festival with all your favorite local brewers, plus new releases at The Answer Brewpub, Canon and Draw, Vasen, Triple Crossing Beer, and Ardent Craft Ales’s Dark Rye for these chilly nights.

We know Thanksgiving is upon us when carrot cake hits the table. After years and years growing up with my mom’s famous carrot cake recipe, there’s nothing like these classic fall spices to make the season’s best baked goods. We’re a family of dessert-lovers, and I encourage you to be, too. Pro tip: bake yours in cupcake pans instead of a full cake pan for maximum icing-indulging.

This week, my childhood dreams met my grown-up dreams, because the perfection of carrot cake is here in a beer. Thank you, Lickinghole Creek, for making this a reality: Rum Barrel Aged Carrot Cake Imperial Amber Ale is ready for your glass at the farm, and it’s full of all the cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, clove, and vanilla that bring out these dessert tastes in a big way.

The Amber Ale was brewed with hundreds of pounds of freshly-grated carrots, according to Lickinghole Creek, and aged in Nicaraguan Rum Barrels. With five specialty malts, fresh rum flavor, American-grown hops, and the brewery’s house American Ale Yeast, the 11% ABV beer is Thanksgiving in a glass.

If you weren’t ready for the holidays yet, you certainly will be now.

PHOTO: Stony Point Beer Festival

This Saturday, the Stony Point Beer Festival returns to town with tons of brewers from Richmond and beyond. Not only will attendees get to get unlimited samples of beer from more than 15 different breweries, they’ll get to try ciders, wines, and other distilled alcohol recipes.

Participating breweries include: Steam Bell Beer Works (Tiramisu Stout and Extra Plenty Hibiscus Cucumber), Legend Brewing Company (Brown Ale and Winter White), Castleburg Brewery and Taproom (Valiant Knight IPA and Dark Ages Imperial Maple Brown), Starr Hill Brewery Mariah Passion Fruit Gose and Little Red Roostarr Coffee Cream Stout), Kindred Spirit Brewing (Headspace IPA and Paradise Lager), Ardent Craft Ales (Helles Lager and IPA-X), Canon and Draw Brewing Company (HOP Pale Ale and Fruit n’ Cream IPA), Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery (9-Mile and Uptown), Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Gingerbread Stout and Great Return IPA), Midnight Brewery (New Beginning and Rockville Red), Truly Hard Seltzer, Big Pippin Cider (White Cranberry and IPA), Bold Rock Hard Cider (White Cranberry and IPA), Vintner’s Cellar Winery and Restaurant of Yorktown, Chesapeake Bay Distillery, and KO Distilling.

With all those options, I’d say it’s a pretty safe guess that you’ll find more than one brew to love. My favorites on that list: Hardywood’s GBS, always, and Canon and Draw’s Fruit n’ Cream IPA. It’s hard to go wrong with Gingerbread Stout, one that the stoutest naysayers have found a place in their hearts for — but even if you’re not a drinker, there’s plenty at this festival for you. River City Sports and Social Club is heading out to keep the fun rolling all day, with Giant Beer Pong, Fowling, Cornhole, and more, plus live music through the event from Jack Ryan Sullivan.

Another note: if you’re planning on attending, I’d buy your tickets early. They’ll go up $10 the day of the event, so hustle, y’all.

PHOTO: Hardywood

Just when you thought Hardywood’s GBS couldn’t get any better, it did. I’m not sure how every new variation of this stout sounds more delicious than the last, but Hardywood’s always got something up their sleeves to keep us anticipating the next great brew.

Apple Brandy MEGA GBS is debuting this Saturday, and you can grab a taste of your own anytime during the day at the brewery. In true stout fashion, GBS keeps the alcohol levels high — and Apple Brandy hits in at 13.5% ABV to ensure that its drinkers will be satisfied after the first glass. The Double Imperial Milk Stout was aged for more than a year, with its barrels first starting the process 13 months ago. Of all the great GBS variations we got to try last holiday season, we still have yet to get our hands on this one.

You can try the Laird’s-Apple-Brandy-brewed special this weekend along with eats from Taqueria Panchito and Bikini Panini, plus live music from Justin Trawick. See you there!

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

Fresh at The Answer Brewpub last week, Button Masher DIPA came to us in cans… and this double-dry-hopped El Dorado, Citra, and Simcoe brew is one you won’t want to miss.

The Answer is famous for their beers, from sours to fruit beers, IPAs, stouts and more, but this Double IPA is one I’m extra-excited for. The Button Masher DIPA cans were released on Election Day, and whether you saw the results you wanted or not, it’s a great way to settle into November (and celebrate if your candidate won their race).

PHOTO: Ardent Craft Ales

Sunlight is becoming limited this time of year; the weather’s bringing us more and more dark hours of the day — and if you’re anything like me, that means you’re waking up even earlier now that daylight savings time has passed. That darkness doesn’t always have to be a bad thing, though, and it’s definitely not at Ardent Craft Ales: they’re celebrating the beginning of winter with their Dark Rye American Imperial Stout.

Stout season is the best time of the year in my humble opinion, bringing longer nights, chilly air, and signaling tons of good holiday food in our future. It’s perfectly-celebrated with Dark Rye, which brings out a rye spiciness and roasted notes into its long-lasting tan head, according to its brewers. This stout is full-bodied, dry, and chocolatey, and it’ll be open for tasting starting tomorrow night at Ardent. The 9.8% ABV stout is at a solid medium on alcohol content as far as these variations go, so if you’re really wanting a heavy drinker after the rainy weather set the mood yesterday, you’ll probably be able to swing a few of them in one evening.

PHOTO: Canon and Draw Brewing Company

Coming up this Friday at Canon and Draw Brewing Company, another great release is on its way. Canon and Draw has been on a great kick of dropping brand-new brews just about every week this season, and we’re here for it.

Next up on the list is their Hop Pale Ale, this time brewed with Mosaic and Hallertau Blanc hops. Norwegian Kviek yeast is the special ingredient in this variation of the rotating Pale Ale series, and with its hot fermentation process, it yields fruity flavors that open the doors for their various hop combinations to shine.

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

Väsen Brewing Company noted the rise of New England IPAs this week, and they’re not wrong — while they seem to be slipping into the taps at every local brewery, you can rest assured that this beer columnist has no complaints about it. The fruity, smooth flavors of an NEIPA (and especially the Double IPAs) just has something unlike any other beer. But the popularity of NEIPAs also brought the slowing-down of the West Coast’s strong and hop-forward tastes of the earlier craft beer days.

Väsen’s taking us back, and we’re stoked about it. This Saturday, Windhook debuts at the Scott’s Addition spot in all its spicy and floral glory. According to its brewers, this classic American trio brings together Centennial, Chinook, and Amarillo hops to honor the brews “that built the craft beer industry.” You’ll find pine notes in this one, along with lemon and orange to complement the more bitter tastes of the classic IPA at their brew release this weekend.

Väsen also released Hane this week, in a collaboration with Benchtop Brewing Company. Hane came together as the product of two farmhouse ales, which were combined with the house mixed Brett culture of Benchtop before bottling after their white wine barrel aging. It’s been described as funky by Vasen, with dried fig, fruity, and earthy flavors, available now at the brewery.

PHOTO: Three Notch’d RVA Collab House

Thirsty Thursdays are alive at Three Notch’d RVA Collab House. The latest edition is their Apple Crumb Amber Ale, which is an extremely close second on the dessert-love scale to our introductory carrot cake beer. This recipe came together with cinnamon, vanilla, and Virginia-grown apples to bring us all the best fall flavors in a special local way.

Also over at Three Notch’d, make sure to give Thackery’s ESB a taste. Its brewers say this one is the perfect combination for early-afternoon Premier League games, so if you’re a soccer fan stuck in a sea of American football enthusiasts, it should be a refreshing companion to your games. This beer was made as an adaptation of the English Extra Special Bitters, and it’s an in-house favorite of the Three Notch’d Head Brewer Willey Broaddus, according to the brewery team.

PHOTO: Triple Crossing Beer

Who remembers Clever Girl?! I definitely do, because this beer shares a name with an old Richmond band that one of my lifelong best friends fronted during his time in the River City. The long-loved brew is returning to Triple Crossing Beer this Friday at their Fulton spot, and it’s a great reason to make a drive out. If you haven’t ever visited Triple Crossing — and like many folks I’ve known in the area, don’t like to venture too far from the city center — you’re missing out. Triple Crossing not only brews some of the best damned beer in the Richmond region, they’ve got a beautiful location in the East End that makes for a nice drive and a beautiful afternoon (especially with the crisp air and changing leaves of these late fall days).

That’s it for this week’s RVA On Tap! As your weekly columnist, I’m here to take all your beer releases, event info, ideas and questions. If you’re a brewer, send me your release info at [email protected], and if you’re a beer enthusiast, drop me a line anytime to talk booze. Catch y’all next week!

RVA ON TAP: The Big Release

Caley Sturgill | August 6, 2019

Topics: Ardent craft ales, beer, beer column, Black Heath Meadery, Blue Bee Cider, breweries, Buskey Cider, courthouse creek cider, events, final gravity brewing co, fine creek brewing, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Isley, local beer, Reservoir Distillery, richbrau, RVA On Tap, scotts addition, scotts addition beer, Starr Hill, strangeways, the answer brewpub, the big release, The Veil Brewing Co., three notchd, Väsen

What’s happening, craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s RVA On Tap, RVA Magazine’s weekly column for all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals, and all the booze news your hearts desire.

If you missed the last column, you can check that out here. Our kegs are overflowing this week with beer releases and festivals, events, and other cool happenings around town — so hold on to your mugs!

This week, we’ve got some great returns of old favorites, plus a brand-new festival: the Scott’s Addition Big Release. All the brewers in Richmond’s booziest neighborhood are coming together for the first annual collaboration release, so if you’re looking for some new flavors in your life, the beer family of Richmond has you covered.

PHOTO: Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

Summer is slowly coming to an end (thank god for me, and maybe a bummer for some of you), and our pals at Hardywood are dropping one of their early-spring favorites in cans this Friday to bring the season of fruity beers full-circle. The Original Five Flavors came out at Hardywood back in May alongside Dreamlike — which sounded like an actual dream, and incredibly tasty — and it’s making its second debut in cans. Dreamlike made its debut again back on August 2, along with Kiwi Lime Berliner Weisse.

The Original Five Flavors is a candy lover’s delight. This one was made to match the early days of Lifesavers candy, and comes in the classic flavors of cherry, orange, lemon, lime, and pineapple. Dreamlike, on the other hand, is a pillowy-soft DIPA, with nice, fresh hops released with Kiwi Lime Berliner’s hot-day flavors.

“What’s that in the clouds over there?” says Hardywood, “A Dog? A Bunny?” Nah, booze. There’s no rush to wake up from this dream.

PHOTO: Final Gravity Brewing Co.

Also returning this Friday is Final Gravity Brewing Co.’s Absolute Magnitude Double IPA. This one was brewed with 100 percent Citra hops to really bring out the fresh hop flavor, and focus in on a widely-loved favorite in the brewing process. Citra brings out orange zest, grapefruit, and lemon tastes that bring this Double IPA up to 8% ABV — and according to the brewers, it “radiates” with its astronomical sum of citrus, magically brewed with a velvety finish.

I’m a big fan of a soft finish to an IPA, and the trend of these fruity IPAs with soft finishes is delicious. Final Gravity never disappoints, so this is definitely one on my list to try for the week!

PHOTO: Scott’s Addition Big Release

Are you looking for a party where you can brewery hop around the neighborhood and try something brand-new at every single one? Yeah, these don’t come around too often. That’s why you’re going to want to head out to Scott’s Addition this Saturday for The Big Release, a massive collab between the booziest area in town with breweries all cooking up fresh recipes for a full day of new brews.

A few of the new releases I’m most excited about on this list start with Blue Bee Cider’s Hot Honey Gold Rush cider. This barrel-aged cider comes from an apple brandy barrel that started off with jalapeño-infused honey, so you’ll get an awesome kick of spice at the end to round out the brandy and honey flavors. Another I can’t wait to try is Three Notch’d RVA Collab House’s Lush-ious — this one looks SO good, y’all. This Maple Pecan Brown Ale (holy wow, I’m in heaven) was brewed in collaboration with Lush Cupcakes. If you haven’t heard yet, Lush makes alcohol-infused cupcakes, and just celebrated their opening in Scott’s Addition. Their Lush-ious collab with Three Notch’d set off to create something similar in beer form, and landed on maple and pecans added into a Three Notch’d brown ale that started off with biscuit and chocolate undertones to create the best dessert-brew flavors ever.

You’ll catch your favorites like Ardent Craft Ales and Strangeways, plus Starr Hill, Vasen, Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Isley Brewing Company, Buskey Cider, Black Heath Meadery, Courthouse Creek Cider, Blue Bee Cider, Reservoir Distillery, and The Veil… who has an extra surprise up their sleeve this week as well.

PHOTO: The Veil Brewing Co.

Last night, The Veil Brewing Co. released four debuts and one return to fill glasses for every taste.

Kicking off the releases, Very Berry Tastee (pictured above) brings the sour and the smoothie to one perfect combination. This thick, fruity ale is the product of combining raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries, blueberries, and strawberries with milk sugar to pull the fruits together in a smoothie-style sour ale that hits in at 5.5% ABV.

Next up comes Steady Incline, a light-orange colored Double IPA with Citra, Galaxy, Amarillo, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops at 8% ABV. Strong Enough follows, and this brand-new IPA release combines some flare with flavors like El Dorado and Vic Secret in addition to its Galaxy, Mosaic, and Citra with a bright color in the glass. Strong Enough is a lighter 6.5% ABV beer, and it comes with Color of Blood’s high 11% ABV for the stronger drinkers out there. Color of Blood is a triple IPA that benefits from hops like Wakatu and BRU-1 to complement Galaxy, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Nelson, and although it pours with a crispy orange juice color, its heavier ABV and bold taste bring out its name.

Another featured release in the bunch is Brenner Pass: Grand Cru, which is returning to commemorate the second anniversary of the beloved local restaurant. This brew is unlike the rest, and drinks more like a fine table wine with textures like Chardonnay coming from its spelt, raw wheat, and floral American hops from the brewing process. The Mixed Fernie is funky and dry with a subtle acidity, and was stowed away and inoculated with The Veil’s house culture to prepare for the anniversary celebration.

All in all, The Veil has a beer for just about every preference out right now, and all of them bring something unique to the table for every kind of drinker. If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to bring your wine friend or your daiquiri friend to a brewery, now’s your chance!

PHOTO: Väsen Brewing Company

Summer may be slowly making its way out the door, but the brutal August heat of the River City is still to come before we can lay this hell season to rest and get back to the good stuff: pumpkin picking, hay rides, getting lost in corn mazes, haunted houses, chilly mornings, hot chai, sweaters, bonfires (!!), weekend trips to the mountains, colorful leaves falling on Monument Avenue, SNOW, the good food and fam time of the holidays, and pretty much everything else that makes cold weather good and summer awful. Halle-fucking-lujah.

Anyway, we’re not there just yet, and it’s going to be a rough one for these next few weeks. Thankfully, Väsen Brewing Company is here to take the heat off.

The Watermelon Puffin is on its way to Väsen this Saturday, and this crisp, refreshing American-style Berliner Weisse is the perfect beer for the end-of-summer hear, according to its brewers. The Watermelon Puffin brings out some slight sour flavors in addition to its watermelon puree to give you all the fruity twists you’ll need when the temp gets above 100° — and you know it’s coming, whether we like it or not. Cool down with these blueberry and lychee notes in a watermelon brew, and try to stay out of the heat (lord knows I will).

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

Out at The Answer Brewpub, a fresh beer made its way in cans right after we got together for RVA On Tap last week. Corporate Headquarters is a Double IPA brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and a touch of Columbus to come together in a nice, pale-orange pour that looks as crisp as it is creamy. Is there any better combination in a beer? I haven’t found one yet, and I don’t plan to as long as these awesome Double IPAs are around.

The Answer also dropped FRESH AF, which is as green as it gets:

PHOTO: The Answer Brewpub

This Session IPA was double-dry hopped with Ella, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops, and according to our buds at The Answer, this crusher “bursts with aromas” of mellow mango before its grapefruit finish. If you’re in the mood for one, go grab one while you can, and don’t forget to give The War on Glycol a taste while you’re out there.

PHOTO: Fine Creek Brewing and Väsen Brewing Company

This week, we also saw an awesome beer feature in a collaboration between Fine Creek Brewing and Väsen Brewing Company. The International dropped as a mixed-fermentation Bière de Garde to celebrate the international collaboration with the Farmhouse Ale Appreciation Society, and it came as part of the International Craft Beer Weekend Red Paint hosted in Richmond last week.

This brew came together with Murphy & Rude Pils malt and raw wheat, and was hopped with Saaz and Strisselspalt — but the real kicker on this one is its unique, prolonged 5-hour boil in addition to primary lager fermentation and secondary wooden barrel fermentation that brings out its funky Brett tones and citrus and grape skins. It’s got a mouth-puckering acidity with a dry finish, so if you’re into the sour and the sweet, these breweries have plenty of options to get your week rolling.

PHOTO: Richbrau Brewing

For National IPA Day, Richmond’s oldest craft brewery dropped an awesome new Citra-hopped beer. Richbrau released Psychic Horse with the tale of its origin:

“Born in 1924, Lady Wonder was a prophetic horse that lived on the southside of Richmond. Taught to communicate on blocks with letters of the alphabet, Lady Wonder answered questions daily from noon to three, 3 questions for $1, and was visited by more than 150,000 people over 30 years. Her prognostications included Truman’s presidential defeat of Dewey, 28 of 28 winning horses at a Baltimore race track, and she garnered national recognition in 1952 for helping police locate the body of a missing Massachusetts boy. Lady Wonder died in 1957 at the age of 33, three years later than she predicted.”

And the horse girls of the world rejoice. Lady Wonder sounds like she really was a wonder to the residents of Richmond in the last century, and I’m not gonna lie, I’m bummed she’s not around in our time. Thankfully, her legend lives on, and like the horse that came from historic Richmond, the brewers who keep her name alive are a big part of our history as well. Richbrau has been a staple of the River City for decades, and now that it’s back, you can get a taste of history at their brewery (and learn something about Richmond’s legends, too).

PHOTO: Black Heath Meadery and Buskey Cider

Coming up this Saturday at Black Heath Meadery, an awesome new collab with Buskey Cider is making its way to the taps for the Scott’s Addition Big Release.

Buskey Orange Ginger Cyser was crafted between the brewers with local ingredients like Virginia apples and Virginia wildflower honey, plus baby yellow ginger from Casselmonte Farm and orange peels.

According to the brewers, this one’s getting drier by the day, and it’s fermenting in the tank ready to make its way into your glass this weekend.

Old-timers in the Virginia beer community can remember pitching tents in the woods and meadows of Nelson County as part of the annual ritual to taste and toast the best of craft beers in the Old Dominion.

The 2019 Virginia Craft Beer Cup Gala on Monday, June 17, was a bit different. Yes, we were under a tent, but the setting was decidedly more elegant, among the venerable stone buildings of the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond.

And yes, it was billed as a gala. “When they originally mentioned it was going to be a ‘gala’ event,” said a friend of mine, “I was thinking red carpet, round tables and creative gala attire. But everyone came as they were.” Yes, you have to love a gala where a guy wearing a T-shirt, cutoffs, and sandals takes the stage amid hoots and hollers to accept a medal for a well-made beer.

Virginia’s contest, sponsored by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, is the largest among state competitions in the country. This year, there were 342 entries in 35 categories. Judges — 39 in all, led by former James River Homebrewers president Anna Shore — followed the guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program.

“We have purposefully focused on the quality of our judging,” said Brett Vassey, president and CEO of the Virginia Manufacturers Association, which is the umbrella organization for the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild. Beers were judged in the categories they entered, a stricter standard than in past years. “That’s a big deal,” Vassey said.

More focused judging and a record number of entries made it a big deal to receive a medal, and you could tell from the energy crackling from the 300 or so brewers, brewery owners, and beer lovers under the tent that having your name called was special.

“We’re totally blown away,” said Bob Powers after New Realm Brewing Company won the first-place Best in Show for Euphonia Pilsner. Powers is director of sales and marketing for the brewery, which he cofounded with Mitch Steele (former head brewer at Stone Brewing Co.) and Carey Falconer. Based in Atlanta, New Realm moved into the Virginia Beach facility vacated by Green Flash in 2018.

Steele is known as a master of IPAs (he wrote a book on the style’s history and evolution), so taking Best in Show for a German-style pilsner is an eye-opener. “It’s really the beer he’s most proud of, and he’s won a few other awards since we’ve had it out,” Powers said.

Last year’s best in show winner also was a lager, the Lil’ Hellion Helles by Brothers Craft Brewing in Harrisonburg (a silver medal winner this year). Though IPAs dominate the marketplace, it’s the nuanced, delicate balance in lagers — pilsners in particular — that reflects the height of brewing arts and gets high scores from judges.

Just as the stylistic pendulum has swung, the spotlight also has broadened as the state’s brewing scene has matured. Gone are the days when Devil’s Backbone dominated contests.

“The [medal] distribution is amazingly statewide,” Vassey said. “The distribution among startups, new breweries and senior breweries — those that have been around a while — is amazingly distributed.”

Numbers bear him out. Breweries in the Tidewater area took home 21 medals, if you count New Realm winning two for Euphonia Pilsner (one for winning its category, one for Best in Show). In the Richmond area, the count is 14 medals; in Central Virginia (Charlottesville and beyond), 13 medals; in the Roanoke area and Southside, nine; in the Shenandoah Valley, 10; in Loudoun County, eight; in outer Northern Virginia (including Fredericksburg), 10; in inner Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, etc.), also 10.

That last group includes the Great American Restaurants group’s Sweetwater Taverns, which has multiple locations in Northern Virginia and Loudoun County. Sweetwater was one of an elite bunch that carried home three medals — firsts for Rusty Roadrunner Lager and Yippee Ei-O Springbock and second for its pale ale. Three other breweries — Center of the Universe in Ashland, 2 Witches Winery & Brewing Company in Danville, and Blue Mountain Barrelhouse in Nelson County — won three medals as well.

Winning one medal is a stamp of excellence for one beer. Winning multiple awards is a stamp of excellence in brewing, and 14 Virginia breweries had their name called twice: Seven Arrows in Waynesboro; Lake Anne Brew House in Reston; The Board Room in Arlington; Adventure in Fredericksburg; Old Bust Head in Vint Hill; Old Ox, Beltway and TrAle in Loudoun County; Fine Creek in Powhatan (including second place Best in Show), Three Notch’d, Starr Hill and Bald Top in Central Virginia; and New Realm and Big Ugly in Tidewater.

Given the record number of entries and the continued growth among Virginia’s craft breweries and brewpubs — more than 280 at last count — it won’t be long before future galas will need a bigger tent.

Review: Starr Hill Summer Jam Pack

Every so often RVA Mag gets some craft brews to try, and its fun to try them out to see what creative recipes Virginia breweries are churning out. Recently, we had the chance to try Starr Hill’s latest releases, the Summer Jam Variety Pack, four cans of light, refreshing goodness and just what we needed on these sweat-your-ass off days we’ve been having.

Now of course, we were in a hot office sampling these, but these four brews would be perfect for a cookout or a lazy day floating on the James. Starr Hill even created a playlist for you to listen to while you drink these.

But let’s get down to what we thought. So, included in the pack is the Grateful Pale Ale, The Hook (Grapefruit Session IPA), The Love Wheat Beer, the Warehouse Pils. Here’s the breakdown:

Warehouse Pils

A 5.5% German style Pils. The brewery  made this in celebration of the Dave Matthews Band 25th Anniversary show. It’s a classic pilsner, malty. For the people who like PBR, this is a classier step up from that. Dry hop bitter aftertaste, easy drinking if you have a block of sharp cheddar around which is what Starr Hill recommends for this brew. Can’t go wrong with a beer and cheese pairing.

The Love Wheat Beer

5.1% German Hefeweizien. Light body, fruity aroma and super easy drinking. Great for summer to have several while drinking near the river or a day at the beach. Little spice on the end. Star Hill suggests lemon dessert bars, which sound delicious. It would be great if they would send those! (Hint, Hint)

The Hook, Grapefruit Session IPA

A 4.9% IPA packed with flavor.  Super zesty with the grapefruit punching you in the face with the first sip, but in a good way. This one was my favorite, the grapefruit overpowers the hops which I like, President John Reinhold wanted a little more of a hop profile, but still took the grapefruit punch to the face like a champ. Starr Hill suggests Jerk chicken with this citrusy session IPA which I think would make a great pairing with the fruit and spice. We do however appreciate them not mailing us jerk chicken. Seasonal, available May-August.

Grateful Pale Ale

A 4.7% hop forward pale ale, a flagship at the brewery. So this was a favorite of both John and myself. I first tried it on a recent trip up to the brewery to scout out rehearsal dinner locations and I couldn’t get enough of it. Its’s a awesome beer for outside and festival season. Very drinkable, fruity and smooth. The brewery used Cascade, Centennial, Mosaic & Falconer’s Flight hops for the Grateful Pale Ale and they really come through. We savored this one and this won out as the office favorite. Starr Hill recommends Thai Green Curry and Lemon Meringue Pie. Odd, but we trust them. They do have a recipe for Grateful mac and cheese which I would highly recommend. Check it out here.

You can only get these for a limited time so check out more details on Starr Hill’s Summer Jam Variety Pack here. Cheers!
