Steel Panther of “Gloryhole” fame, kicks off US tour at the NorVA next week

If you’ve been outdoors in the last couple of months, no doubt you’ll have noticed that we’re smack-dab in the middle of Summer.

If you’ve been outdoors in the last couple of months, no doubt you’ll have noticed that we’re smack-dab in the middle of Summer. Many of us have already engaged in all the classic Summer activities, like pool parties, and barbecues, and day-drinking til you pass out and get a sunburn so bad you have to skip work the next day. But no Summer is complete until you’ve taken in a least one great Summer concert. You may think you’ve already seen one such concert, you may think you have the perfect one in mind, but believe me, friends, when I say that unless you you catch Steel Panther at the NorVa next Friday, you’re in for a mediocre Summer.

For those who don’t know, Steel Panther is the result of four of the foxiest guys in Los Angeles getting together and deciding to spend the rest of their lives partying around the world, spreading sex, drugs, and heavy metal wherever they go. Featuring Michael Starr on lead vocals, Satchel on guitar, Lexxi Foxx on bass, and Stix Zadinia on drums, the band has laid waste to countless garages, dive bars, stadiums, and music festivals around the world.

They recently released their second live audio/video recording aptly titled Live from Lexxi’s Mom’s Garage and are currently about to kick off their US Summer tour.

After a quick break from touring in Australia, bassist Lexxi Foxx was gracious enough to talk a bit about the ups and downs of life on the road, what’s next for the band, and rocking in the Old Dominion.

For Foxx, kicking things off in Virginia means starting the tour on a high note. “We had a good experience in Virginia,” Foxx said. “Between what we do as a band and keeping heavy metal alive and the partying and things like that, sometimes you don’t know where you are, but I do remember Richmond.”

It could be the infamous humidity that makes Virginia stand out to Foxx, which is a shame considering he considers himself more of an Autumn person. “My favorite time of year is Fall,” he said, “it’s a little cooler, and we can wear all our bitchin’ leather jackets.” Still, Summer tours aren’t without their charms. “Summer’s cool to tour because chicks wear bitchin’ shorts,” Foxx said.

Of course, there’s a lot more to touring than the weather. “[My] favorite part of touring is the adventure. We never know who we’re going to be with, or what we’re going to do that night, or what cool people we’ll meet, or what kind of cool drugs we’re going to have, and also changing the set list around,” Foxx said, “we like to play different tunes.”

Alas, life can’t be all peaches and cream, and like the poet once said, every rose has its thorn. “My least favorite [part of touring] is being on a bus, being an old man with three other dudes that are old too,” Foxx said, “Stix leaves his drugs around the bus, so there’s a chance we’ll get busted, Michael farts a lot, Satchel’s always looking out the back. So it’s really tough to tour in a small area on a bus, so you’ve just got to take sleeping pills and knock yourself out and just hope to wake up.”

Luckily, there’s more to being one of the hardest rocking bands on the planet than touring. For instance, Foxx mentioned the new album the band’s recording. “The new record should come out sometime next year,” he said. “We got done with everything as far as vocals right now. We got some surprise guests on the record, and we’re really looking forward to putting it out for our fans.”

If you’ve never seen Steel Panther live, next weekend’s as good a time as any to be amazed. And even if you have seen them live before, Foxx says that’s no reason to skip their upcoming show. “We’re stoked to come out there,” he said. “Every show’s going to be different.”

Steel Panther will be performing at the NorVa in Norfolk, VA on Friday, July 29th at 8PM. Tickets are available online or at the box office.
