FRIDAY: Air Sex Championships At Strange Matter!

Here’s an event which promises to be every bit as fun as it is bizarre. We all know what air guitar is, so the idea of what air sex is should be pretty easy to grasp. But who would ever think to turn it into a public exhibition, much less a worldwide competition?

Here’s an event which promises to be every bit as fun as it is bizarre. We all know what air guitar is, so the idea of what air sex is should be pretty easy to grasp. But who would ever think to turn it into a public exhibition, much less a worldwide competition? Well, the movement towards such a thing has been spearheaded by Chris Trew of Austin TX’s New Movement Theatre. Trew recently took the act to America’s Got Talent, where–in an amusingly ironic turn of events–he offended notoriously scandalous shock jock Howard Stern and was not given an opportunity to advance in the competition. Trew claims that he was “robbed,” while sheknows.com said, “it was definitely not a million dollar act – just a sick attempt for 15 minutes of fame.” You can decide for yourself by watching this video, starting at the 1:35 mark:

But if you really want to know everything there is to know about air sex, you can learn all about it, live and in person, tomorrow night at Strange Matter! That’s when, in association with the Richmond Comedy Coalition, Chris Trew and the New Movement Theatre will be bringing the Air Sex Championships World Tour to RVA! Any RVA residents who feel like they’ve got the skills necessary to get down and dirty onstage with an imaginary partner is welcome to sign up and compete, with the winner scoring a trip to Austin to compete in the final round of the World Air Sex Championship. Here’s what to expect, in the words of the event organizers:

AIR SEX is a lot like Air Guitar, but instead of rocking out with an imaginary guitar, you’re making sweet and/or filthy love with an imaginary sex partner. You choose a clip of music, you show up in whatever sort of wardrobe you like, and you come up on stage and show everyone how you do it. Or how you wish you could do it. Or how you once had it done to you, and oh my god was that a bad idea and while it’s embarrassing to show that act to a room of strangers, you know that you need to do it now in order to make sure that no one else falls down the same rabbit hole you got stuck inside. Or, you know, just do it however you want.

THE RULES
Contestants have up to 3 minutes to perform an Air Sex routine. Just give us your stage name and your choice and then get ready to make pretend love to nothing at all. Our main rule is that you must be sexing at least one invisible partner during your routine.

Regardless of whether or not you’re actually interested in participating, this event is guaranteed to be a fun and hilarious time for all in attendance! And to make the evening even better for the spectators, there’ll be “Foreplay” before the main event, in the form of several comedians, both local and on tour, to warm up the crowd and get everybody in the mood! The RVA stop will feature the talents of Sophie Johnson, Rob Gagnon, David Marie-Garland, and of course our illustrious host Chris Trew. So whether you want to test out your air sex skills and compete for a shot at the big time, or you just want to see some sidesplitting insanity on a Friday night, the RVA Air Sex Championships are sure to show you a wild and wonderful time!

The Light That Never Went Out

There is a spotlight still mounted in the rafters of 528 N. 2nd Street. It has been there since 1914. It has outlasted segregation, fire, the highway that cut Jackson Ward in two, and decades of silence. On the nights when the Hippodrome Theater fills up, that light...
