Then, on Sunday, chill out with either an acoustic country show at Capital Ale House or a free installment of Silent Music Revival with Obliv. There is plenty to do and most of it is cheap or free, so hit the town and celebrate the true beginning of Summer!

Friday, 6/21: Free Time @ Strange Matter
This Friday, come check out the heartbreaking pop strains of Free Time, the Australian band fronted by Dion Nania. Free Time sing about traveling the world and the ups and downs that life brings. Their songs are mournful at some points, hopeful and lilting at others. They will also be joined by local favorites The Ar-Kaics, and ambient post-rockers Everyone Dies in the End. Come on out for some sad but dancey music–cover is only seven bucks!
Saturday, 6/22: Return of Bump in the Night @ Balliceaux
It’s been two months since this all-girl DJ trio has rocked out at Balliceaux, and they are back with a vengeance! As usual, Area Woman, Sister Goldenhaze, and DJ Mixie will be spinning a mix of gospel, funk, disco, etc. In addition to being their first event in a while, it’s also Area Woman’s birthday party! Bring your dancing shoes, it’s free and starts at 10:00pm.
Saturday, 6/22: Sounds of RVA @ Bogart’s
Another triumphant return this weekend is the second Sounds of RVA showcase at Bogart’s. Local music journalist Sarah Moore, who writes the Sounds of RVA column for us and has her own site too, has started putting on monthly shows featuring the best of local Richmond talent, and they are awesome! This month’s installment features the sounds of psychedelic punk rockers Basmati, along with garage-punkers Lars Von Trier & The Masters of Industry, and post-punkers Freaky J & The Bears. Admission is five dollars, and helps out with the possibility of future showcases. Be there!
Sunday, 6/23: Mike Cooley @ Capital Ale House
If you are a fan of Drive-By Truckers or outlaw country in general, you aren’t going to want to miss this show. Mike Cooley of Drive-By Truckers fame is on tour as an acoustic solo act, and he’ll be appearing at Capital Ale House for a a mere $15 in advance, $18 at the door! If you like his band or you just love unplugged country, don’t miss this!
Sunday, 6/23: Silent Music Revival @ Gallery 5
Silent Music Revival is back at Gallery 5! At these cool events, a performer provides the soundtrack for an old silent film, without having seen the film prior to the show. This week, hip hop producer Ohbliv is providing the soundtrack for the 1921 classic, The Mechanical Man. From what I can infer, his music will go amazingly well with the film, and the best part is, the show is absolutely free! Come out and celebrate good hip hop and old movies, 8:00pm sharp.
