Disruptive Snow, Sleet On Tap Monday

UPDATE 9:02 AM 3/2 – My snow totals map is now up on the Winter Weather Event Maps page. A WINTER STORM WARNING is now in effect for much of central Virginia including the City of Richmond, Chesterfield, Powhatan, Goochland, Henrico, and Hanover.
After looking over today’s model runs, my confidence is now very high that we will see a moderate snow/sleet event across much of Virginia. Precip will move in early morning on Monday (between 6 and 8am) as some sleet/freezing rain, then it quickly changes to snow by mid-morning, and continues through 7pm Monday evening, tapering off by 10pm. When all is said and done, I think about 4-6” is about right for metro Richmond with higher amounts north and west of the city. Western Chesterfield and Henrico will likely be on the higher end, 6-8” with lower amounts on the order of 2-4” south and east of Richmond where mixing with sleet will be an issue.

I want to really emphasize that roads will become dangerous even before noon. Temperatures will fall below freezing between 7 and 9am, leading to a period of sleet til 10 or so, then snow. Because it will have rained beforehand, VDOT cannot pre-treat the roads. Temperatures will stay well below freezing through the rest of the day and overnight so widespread school closings are likely.
