The Groove That Moves Your Feet At The VMFA

VMFA’s Hip Hop Line Dancing event brought people together with music, movement, and nostalgia in an artistic atmosphere.

The VMFA hosted a night of fun with its hip hop line dancing event on Friday, February 22nd. The event took place in the atrium of the museum from 6-8pm, with music provided by DJ KP. There was a diverse crowd of all ages and dynamics that came out and danced the night away collectively.

Now, you might think of line dancing as a country music thing, but it was surprisingly easy to see it transfer to the hip hop form. Each song had specific choreography that went along with it, so the DJ made sure to guide and assist everyone on what to do. Before each song DJ KP choreographed the steps one by one over the mic, demonstrated alone, and then did them together with the crowd. It was only a matter of time before everyone had the moves down.

After about an hour, the museum was packed with people dancing and mingling. It didn’t take long before more folks got on the dance floor, trying to learn and get in line with the others. There were all sorts of familiar songs to bring people in, like “Before I let Go” by Frankie Beverly, “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid, “Wobble Baby” by V.I.C, and many more!

Soon there wasn’t just dancing but singing going on as well. You could feel the nostalgia and good energy of the room as people socialized and bonded. The galleries also remained open during the time, keeping artistic exploration as an option for those who got tired of dancing. Throughout the evening, a consistent flow of people continued to arrive and join the fun.

The event truly turned out to be very entertaining and inclusive, so much so that it seemed as if many people didn’t want it to end. Clearly, the music helped to bring people together.

Hip hop line dancing takes place at the VMFA on a semi-irregular schedule, but hopefully we’ll see another one of these dance nights this year. To stay up the date with events hosted by the VMFA, check out the events calendar on their website.
