Back To The Future with Sam Van Olffen

Here we are everyone, ahem, the future! No flying cars and men on Mars but we have iPhones. Yeah, not what I imagined 2010 to be as a little kid, but life don’t care about your dreams son. We live in the mundane reality most of the time. Luckily, there are people in this world that can take their imaginations and create something real for the rest of us.

The images of Sam Van Olffen peel back the curtain and show us an alternate universe; one that is fucked up big time. Babies with exposed tubes, married couples in gas masks, mechanical soldiers walking the street with gigantic guns, the iconography has been used before but every time I see a take on steam punk I have to check it out.

So in honor of our new health care bill, here is a some dark and foreboding imagery.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. "You have to be delusional to be an artist." That’s how Peter Cochrane closes our conversation. We’re sitting across from each other in a quiet Richmond studio, the air thick with pollen and thought. The line lands not as a punchline but as a thesis offered without...

The Pressure to Mean Something: Inside the VCUarts’ MFA Exhibition

If you walk into the 2025 VCUarts MFA Thesis Exhibition expecting a finale or a big conclusion, prepare to encounter something else—something quieter and less resolved. A residue. A gesture mid-motion. An echo. When I walked into the opening reception on April 11, I...

The Big Dipper Innovation Summit kicked off today, and if you’re not here yet, well, you’re already behind. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill business event—it’s where culture and business smash together in ways that actually mean something. Skeptical? We get it. But...
