Here’s a behind the scenes video documenting the creation of the Hip-Hop Meditation Station, a 3D art piece that has been on display at the G40 Art Gallery and event space (115 W. Broad St.) throughout the 2012 G40 Art Summit. Created by Scarlett and Gabriel Pons of Fredericksburg’s Ponshop Studio, this installation is “a visual chronicle of the Hip-Hop culture, charting each of the four elements of Hip-Hop (DJing, MCing, B-Boying and Graffiti Art) throughout the course of the time. Each art panel charts the trajectory of Hip-Hop’s progression by listing those who have impacted the movement through their involvement. This chronology is by no means complete, but offers up a brief history lesson for younger generations on the birth of an American art form that went on to in influence the world.” This video makes clear just how much work went into its creation, and how many different people lent their efforts in order to bring it to fruition. Like hip-hop itself, it’s a group effort.

Gabriel Pons’s involvement with the G40 Art Summit will continue this Sunday from 1 to 3 PM, as he teaches a workshop called “ReUsed/ReMixed,” in which students will create works of art using 12 inch vinyl LPs as their canvas. Pons will demonstrate the use of a variety of different media, including spray paint and acrylic paint pens, in fulfilling the students’ vision.
