Mickael Broth’s Gated Community At Artisphere

Richmond artist Mickael Broth, a former graffiti artist who became a fine artist and sign painter after serving a 10-month jail sentence beginning in 2004, has spent the last year working on Gated Community, a memoir detailing his experiences with incarceration and the relevance of his personal story to society at large. Now, beginning on Wednesday April 18, he’ll begin a residence at the Works In Progress Gallery at Artisphere, in Arlington VA.

Richmond artist Mickael Broth, a former graffiti artist who became a fine artist and sign painter after serving a 10-month jail sentence beginning in 2004, has spent the last year working on Gated Community, a memoir detailing his experiences with incarceration and the relevance of his personal story to society at large. Now, beginning on Wednesday April 18, he’ll begin a residence at the Works In Progress Gallery at Artisphere, in Arlington VA. During his Artisphere residency, Mickael will be working on finishing the final edits to Gated Community and creating original works of art using the same limited methods and tools he used while serving time in a jail cell (i.e. ball point on legal paper, M&M’s soaked in a bottle cap full of water to make water colors, and q-tips as brushes). Broth will be in residence at the Works In Progress Gallery from Wednesday April 18 through Friday April 20, from 4-11 PM each day, and again on Friday May 11 from 4-11 PM, Saturday May 12 from noon-11 PM, and Sunday May 13 from noon-5 PM.
