"Richmond has your back... maybe." That about sums it up, doesn't it? It's the slogan behind KCPFC, a new football-inspired project from Kwame Hayford, the guy behind Kwam's Chicken Project, and Richmond designer Ignatius Friend. The collection blends soccer culture...
Richmond has achieved a perfect score of 100 on the 2024 Municipal Equality Index (MEI), a comprehensive assessment of LGBTQ+ inclusion in municipal policies, services, and laws. Released annually by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), this year’s MEI evaluated 11 cities and towns in Virginia, with Richmond standing proudly alongside nine...
I feel a gravitational pull towards heavier music now that the days are darker. It feels right to match the heavy sky. In the same breath I feel like no matter what season it is, you have to listen to a little bit of Spring music, stuff to remind you what the sun feels like. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I...
Richmond has $3 million up for grabs—money meant to improve the city, boost its neighborhoods, and maybe even change a few lives. But here’s the twist: for once, city hall isn’t the ones calling the shots. Instead, they’re turning to the people, asking a deceptively simple question: what do you want? It’s a bold move, giving the public the reins...
Back in January, I had the chance to shadow the independent film Saturnalia for three days, capturing behind-the-scenes photos of the Gearhead Camera production on location. After filming wrapped in February, I was fortunate to speak with producer, writer and cinematographer Max Fischer and director and co-writer Daniel Lerch. Their...

And with Thursdays rainfall washing away the illusions of the past, our intentions have never felt more clear. At...

I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com. The Camel Saturday,...
There are certain films that aren’t just watched but absorbed, metabolized into the DNA of an entire culture. For hip-hop, Belly is one of those films. The late '90s street saga, directed by the legendary Hype Williams, wasn’t Hollywood— Hollywood didn’t know what to do with it. This was a film made for people who understood it, who...
In a David-and-Goliath battle unfolding over Richmond’s Charged Up Entertainment, this local institution, led by hip-hop artist and entrepreneur Noah Oddo, has been locked in a long-running battle to defend its logo from the Cleveland Guardians baseball team—a story we’ve followed since 2022. Photo courtesy of Charged Up The dispute centers on...
Halloween seemed to fly by this year—I barely made it to any haunted houses or ghost tours before Thanksgiving’s brown-and-orange gloom settled in. My antidote? Heading to the Byrd on Tuesday, November 19th for the premiere of WIGGLERS by Seyla Hossaini, alongside The Dirt Eater by Jim Stramel, Traders by Olivia Gropp, and Doctor Drain Brain by...
