Tapped: BrewHaHa Beer Fest, Trapezium’s Banana Cream Pie Ale, & COTU’s Gose Fest

What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s “Tapped,” RVA Magazine’s go to weekly craft beer column where you can find all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals and all the booze news your little hearts’ desire.

If you missed last week’s beer news, you can check those out here. Our cup is overflowing with news this week from releases to events, and other cool happenings around town, so hold on to your mugs because we’re getting ready to tap this thing!

Gear up for a big festival this weekend beer lovers, as Virginia Museum of History & Culture (formerly Virginia Historical Society), kicks off its 2nd annual BrewHaha Virginia Craft Beer Festival this Saturday. The event will feature delicious brews from 10 Virginia breweries and 2 Virginia cideries, live music, food, and more. This year, they are also introducing a new VIP event, “Battle of the Brews” from 4:30-6:00 pm before the main festival, that showcases Richmond-area breweries’ renditions of a historic beer recipe from their collection. Don’t miss this chance to sip history! VIP tickets: $40. Only 250 VIP tickets available! General Admission tickets: $30. Designated Driver/Non-Drinking Ticket: $10.

Get excited, because this Friday, Hardywood will have its juicy IPA, Tropication, back to cure your rainy day blues with its smooth and bright deliciousness. Available on draft and in 4/16oz cans to go in the Richmond, West Creek and Charlottesville taproom

Next week, Petersburg’s Trapezium will release the last of their small batch pie series, Banana Cream Pie. This imperial cream ale is brewed with bananas, lactose, vanilla cookies, and vanilla bean. Their pie series has been super popular this summer, so if you haven’t had time to get down there and try one, next Wednesday is your last chance!

This Saturday, Isley releases its Charlotte Shandy, a lemon shady-style ale made in collaboration with the Virginia Historical Society.  For this 3.5 percent brew, Isley took inspiration from a handwritten recipe out of Charlotte County, Virginia, 1840 to create a light, slightly sweet, and crisp beer for easy summer drinking. It will be on tap at the brewery and available at VHS’ upcoming beer festival, BrewHaha.

Vasen Brewing is kicking their Gose month this Wednesday by dropping their Otter Series which includes 4 brand spanking new sours! Try some new brews and watch the Kickers road match with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

On Thursday, Ardent Craft Ales will have a can release of its IPA X. IPA X is double dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic hops, an exciting combination that provides big citrus and tropical fruit notes. 4-packs of 16 oz. cans will be available in the brewery beginning Thursday, August 2, and will hit shelves around RVA after that. Snag some grub from Go Go Vegan Go while you’re there.

This Saturday, Center of the Universe is hosting Gose Fest, where not only are they releasing There Gose Summer, a traditional German-style sour brewed with heaps of tangerine and a dash of salt, they made seven variants of the gose so you have plenty to choose from to delight your palette. Here’s the rundown: Ribena (Black Currant), Lavender-Lemon, Thyme, Dry Hopped w/ Bravo, Pineapple-Vanilla, Lavender-Rose, and Green Chili Pepper.

This weekend, Fine Creek Brewing will have it’s Strawberry Rhubarb Brett Saison back in the taproom. They still have a small amount of the Oud Bruin in keg, and some bottles. Old Money will be playing there Saturday, while they will be tapping a Strawberry Brut IPA with a steal the glass deal! Django Tango will also be playing Sunday.

Buskey Cider is kicking off its 3rd Annual 804 Day this Saturday, celebrating all that is Richmond over pints of cider, cans of beer, and incredible makers that are local to RVA! The cidery will also be releasing our brand new Peach Tea Cider, crafted with CaryTown Teas Peach Blossom White blend, exactly what you’re looking for to survive the rest of this hot summer weather. Three Notch’d RVA Collab House returns this Thursday with its weekly collaboration. This time, it’s “Lichtbrecher”, a Berliner Weisse courtesy of RVA Head Brewer Willey Broaddus. The brew is a light, wheat beer brewed for hot summer days. Pint Specials from 4-7pm

Strangeways Brewing will a host special beer release party this Saturday featuring I Cary’d a Watermelon Berliner Weisse, Daily Palmer Iced Tea Shandy, and over 36 other varieties of delicious brews for you to choose from. The Crazy Train XPress Food Truck will serve up the good eats, and The Embalmers will end your Saturday night with their Surf-Mod-Psych-Hot Rod Rockabilly Instrumentals.
