RVA rapper Dr. Millionaire has been establishing himself on the scene for quite a while, but he actually still hasn’t released a full length solo project. That’s about to change, though, with the impending release of My First Million. The last full-length record Dr. Millionaire appeared on was Dr. Hovey & Isaiah the Gentleman, a collab with his longtime partner Hovey Benjamin, released under the name Isaiah & Hovey. That was back in spring 2012, nearly three years ago, and Dr. Millionaire’s been through a lot of changes since then. When we asked for some details about what we can expect from My First Million, this is what he had to say:

This is the first album I’ve released in three years and my first solo project ever. This record is more sincere and open than any of my other projects. It’s fueled by sadness and inner turmoil as well as the giant chip on my shoulder to prove that I’m one of the very best at what I do. There’s a very honest side to this project that will surprise people, but it’s still got all the drug references and tongue-in-cheek braggadocio people have come to expect from the Millionaire. This album represents me, where I came from, and where I’m at. I’m excited to share that with people, and I hope that they enjoy losing themselves in my voice and my story, My First Million.

If, after reading that, you’re worried that the fun-loving ladies man you know from songs like “GRL” and “Alt Bitcs” is a thing of the past, one listen to “More Songs Than Pac” should dispel all fears. The Hovey Benjamin-produced beat is based around a spooky piano sample, but Dr. Millionaire still starts the track by bragging about his prowess with the ladies. As he says early on, “My dick is Mike Jordan, I’m just Scottie Pippen.” But later he changes it up on you, showing some levels to his game by beginning the second verse with a discussion of his favorite authors. “Chillin’ with bitches and smokin’ that weed. Reading that Chaucer, but my favorite author is probably Paul Auster–he’s got some good reads. Sometimes I feel darker and like Stephen King.” See, this is why the hipster girls love him–Dr. Millionaire is an educated loverman. Check out “More Songs Than Pac” below:

My First Million should drop sometime right around the turn of the year. It’ll feature guest verses from Chaz French, Eddie Vanz, Chance Fischer, and Nike Nando, and production is handled by Conrizzle, Hovey Benjamin, Gray Matter Beats, EJ Bollman, and Baby Nate. Multiple videos are currently in production, and we’ll bring those to you as we find out about them. Download your own copy of “More Songs Than Pac” from Dr. Millionaire’s website, drmillionaire.com. And of course, keep up with releases, live dates, and more by following him on social media: @isaiahraps on twitter, on facebook at facebook.com/DrMillionaire, and on instagram @drmillionaire.

Opinion | Richmond, We Don’t Need Another Love Song

Music has always been a mirror. It tells us who we are, what we value, and, sometimes, what we’re too afraid to face. But if music is supposed to reflect the world around us, then what does it say that so much of today’s mainstream music says… nothing at all? Richmond...
