Friday, 5/31: Turnover Record Release @ Strange Matter
Start your weekend off with a great melodic punk matinee at Strange Matter! VA Beach quartet Turnover is releasing their debut full-length, Magnolia, on Run For Cover Records, and they’re coming to Richmond to celebrate the release with all of their RVA fans. These guys are creating quite a buzz with their heartfelt tunes, and this album is set to take them to the next level, so while you still have a chance to catch them on a small stage, it’d be wise to do so! With support from northeastern pop-punkers Hostage Calm and Daylight, plus RVA’s own Boxer and Florida’s Featherweight, this show will be jam-packed with rad sounds. Plus, plenty of teenage kids losing their minds, which is always a fun sight.
Friday, 5/31: Heavy Medical @ Strange Matter
Another rad punk show is also hitting Strange Matter later on this Friday, headlined by Heavy Medical, the awesome noise-punk trio from Philly. They will be accompanied by another sweet, fast punk band; Crappy Funeral, from Seattle, and local openers Gilmore Guys. Another local artist should also be added to the bill before the week is up. Come on out if you are looking for a night of punk thrashing and catchy songs!
Saturday, 6/1: Night of Honky Tonk Angels 4 @ Capital Ale House
Not only is this a great night of girl-power country, all the proceeds from admission go to a great pro-woman cause; The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. The night will feature performances from Granville Automatic, Daniella Cotton, The Saddletones, and many more awesome acts, and is sponsored by Lifecare Medical Transport and Hohner USA. All this takes place at Capital Ale House, home of amazing burgers and a ridiculous selection of drinks. Admission is only ten dollars, so come out and support female country musicians and the fight against breast cancer.
Saturday, 6/1: The Dillinger Escape Plan @ Kingdom
If you are a fan of the math-metal supergroup that is Dillinger Escape Plan, you’ll be interested to know that they are playing in Richmond this Saturday, with awesome deathcore legends The Faceless and local shredders Seraph. Tickets are $16 online, $18 at the door, but it’s a stellar lineup, and it doesn’t look like there will be any pay-to-play bands on the bill. This will be a ferocious night of hard-hitting metal you don’t get to see every day, so don’t miss out.
Sunday, 6/2: Josh Small & Julie Karr @ Helen’s
To wind down your weekend, here’s a laid-back acoustic double bill. Josh Small and Julie Karr, two local folk singers who’ve attracted some attention around town over the years with their emotional vocals and passionate delivery, will be sharing the stage (actually just a corner of the room) at Helen’s and playing some great songs for all to enjoy. Julie’s headed back to Florida, the land of her birth, very soon, and she’s been playing a bunch of shows around town to say goodbye to RVA. This will be the last of those, so if you haven’t caught her farewell tour yet, make sure you’re at Helen’s this Sunday night!
