Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry brings his Funk Apostles to The Camel Monday night

If you’re keeping up on the world of jazz, funk, and R&B these days, you’re probably aware of Snarky Puppy. This Texas-by-way-of-Brooklyn musical collective has been making waves with its instrumental fusion sound for nearly a decade now, culminating in their winning 2014’s Best R&B Performance Grammy. Now Snarky Puppy keyboardist Cory Henry has a brand new instrumental side project called The Funk Apostles, and he’ll be bringing this group to The Camel Monday night!

Henry’s been making amazing music since he was a child, once reaching the finalist round in an Apollo Theatre talent competition when he was only six years old! He started his adult music career by touring with jazz saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and has since worked with everyone from Kirk Franklin to Michael McDonald to Nas. He’s a current member of the core touring lineup of Snarky Puppy, and this past winter, he put together a brand new group called The Funk Apostles, featuring guitarist Andrew Bailey, keyboardist Nick Semrod, drummer Cleon Edwards, and bassist Sharay Reed. This group is currently on their second tour ever, and as part of that tour, they’ll be coming to the Camel on Monday, April 13.

Get an idea of what Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles have in store for you by checking out this excerpt from a January 2015 performance in Baton Rouge, LA–only their fifth show together!

This might be the only chance RVA heads ever get to see a jazz/funk superstar like Cory Henry in such an intimate environment, so you should definitely jump at the chance to catch this show. Henry and co. will receive opening support on this bill from Jung Funk, a Southern Belles/Silo Effect side project who play “70s style throwback jams and some obscure funk and R&B covers” according to drummer Raphael Katchinoff. The whole thing kicks off Monday, April 13 at 8 PM at The Camel. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and can be ordered HERE. Get down with it!
