Remi Wolf, Dana and Alden

Brown’s Island

California’s Remi Wolf has quickly become a household name in the pop world. Her sound is part of a larger disco-inspired revival that has been gaining serious traction in recent years. It’s the perfect way to kick off summer shows in Richmond—get out and dance the night away on the city’s most vibrant island.

Dana and Alden, a duo from the Northwest, are making waves, and I’m personally excited to see a jazzy, unconventional group find such success. They’re like butter on tan brown bread—smooth and effortless. The scene that’s been cultivated in the wake of Jacob Collier’s success is a precious gem we should appreciate while it’s still thriving.

The Ar-Kaics, Power Pants, Added Dimensions, Hard Copy

Cobra Cabana

The Ar-Kaics (pronounced R-K-X’s) are a true gem in the modern music scene. They have a ‘60s-inspired sound that remains uniquely their own. Their music feels like both a relic and a revival of a subculture that could easily ignite today’s youth, spreading like fire on straw. There’s something universally compelling and effortlessly enjoyable about this sound.

Power Pants, my beloved. Nonstop egg-punk troops charging through a cartoonish landscape—true love, me and Power Pants. I haven’t caught Added Dimensions live yet, but their almost lo-fi sound has me hooked. They’re the kind of band that makes you want to grab a guitar, scribble some lyrics, and claim your own stage. I discovered Hard Copy a while back and immediately fell for their post-punk, Devo-esque vibe. Their vocal delivery is manic, obsessive, and it gets me fired up.

The Camel

Local trio Oh Devil is taking over The Camel this weekend for a single release. Up until now, they’ve been releasing a 3-song EP and a single on all platforms. They’re fun and sentimental, with the deep friendship between the members infusing their songs with a tangible, almost physical presence. Oh Devil is like the lunch table of charismatic misfits in high school, making every moment feel like a scene from a coming-of-age film.

What can I say about Shagwuf besides endless praise? They’re one of the best live acts around—check them out and see for yourself. I’ve been obsessed with “Ocean Deep,” the latest single from local outfit Roughshod. They’re pure mesmerization and flow. I’ve written about Charm Offensive before, so I’ll just say they’re one of the most beautifully sounding acts in town. They’re both a forest and a river.

NEW TUNES

No Advice’ by Bagged

I’d been hearing nothing but good things about Bagged, and their EP is out to prove it. It’s a fantastic evolution from the punk and emo of the 2010s, like an adrenaline shot to something we all know and love. The drums on these three tracks are especially fascinating—pure, unrelenting drive.

No Ghosts No Problem’ by Suped Up

This is the second single from this local duo, and it’s a whole lot of fun to get lost in. There’s something about it that makes you want to shake, bounce around, and dance in a delightfully strange way. You’ll have the chance to do just that on Saturday at Get Tight.
