The super-scorcher summer weather is here, and we are steadily melting in Richmond.
For us, it’s way too hot for full-bodied, tannic red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot, and Shiraz. We need to feel hydrated and refreshed, not bogged down further by the heat with a heavier wine.
When shopping for wines this summer, try to avoid bottles that are higher in ABV. Wines with higher alcohol content are more likely to make you feel dehydrated and sluggish in the heat. Maybe shoot for something around 12.5% or under. Wines lower in alcohol are usually lighter in body and will feel less heavy overall.
Look for something with nice acidity. Wines low in acidity can seem flat and heavy during the summer. Tannins can dry you out on the coldest of days, so it’s best to avoid them altogether when the heat is like this. If possible, steer toward unoaked or lightly oaked wines. More than a light touch of oak will probably feel unpleasant when the Real Feel is pushing 105°.
It’s probably best to steer clear of the heavily oaked Chardonnays, but if that’s your favorite, a great substitute could be an unoaked traditional Chablis.
So: your pals, Gomez and Morticia, have compiled a wonderful little list of fun wines that’ll help get you through the summer heat wave. We’ll tell you what they cost and where you can get them. Crank up the AC and bring the porch pounders back inside — it’s way too hot on the patio, Daddio.
With weather like this, we’re looking for something light, bright, crisp, and refreshing. Maybe a light-bodied white wine, maybe a nice Rosé. Maybe a Pinot Grigio, Albariño, or Sauvignon Blanc. If you prefer reds, maybe a slightly chilled Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais.

Sparkling

Alma 4 ‘Almacita’ Brut
This surprisingly affordable sparkling Chardonnay from Argentina satisfies that soda craving you get on a hot day — without the thick sugar that lingers in the back of your throat. Your mouth is greeted by soft bubbles tasting of yellow apples and peaches, with flavors that are not too sweet or overpowering.
Almacita also makes a sparkling rosé with red berry notes and is within the same price point.

Diletta Tonello ‘Marachelle’ Frizzante Bianco
The name ‘Marachelle’ means a prank or a joke — but trust us when we say, this wine is no joke. The “prank” is a 10% Chardonnay twist added to this Italian Pet-Nat made from 90% indigenous Durella grapes. Lightly sparkling with tropical tones and mouth-watering acidity, this organic Italian white has become a warm-weather favorite.

Reigning Sun White
South Africa makes fantastic Chenin Blanc — and a Chenin with a bit of fizz? Now you’re talking. This light, acidic, zingy wine is rounded with notes of pineapple, elderflower, and citrus. Serve cold on a hot day, and try it with Korean or Mexican cuisine.

Vinícola de Nulles Cava Rosat Brut ‘Adernats’
Spain makes some of the most deliciously inexpensive sparkling wines on the planet. This rosé, with strawberry and raspberry notes, is no exception. It’s expressive, balanced, and creamy, with sharp bubbles that give it extra texture — perfect for pairing with meaty dishes, red sauce pastas, or strong cheeses.

White Wines

Domaine Labbé Abymes (Savoie)
Born in the land of fondue, raclette, and other cheeses with strong personalities, this wine shows off the beauty of the Savoie region near Lake Geneva. It’s bright, crisp, with a hint of salinity to balance out its floral notes. Pairs beautifully with seafood, cheese, or light pasta dishes.

La Croix Gratiot Picpoul de Pinet
Coastal wines always lure us in like a siren’s song. This classic French white is fresh and crisp with notes of green apples, lime, white flowers, and a hint of seaside salt. Typically paired with seafood, but it’s pretty versatile. Look for the iconic tall, skinny green bottle and let the French sirens sing to you.

Rosé / Orange

Müller-Ruprecht Landwein Trocken Orange
This was our first orange wine from Germany, and it surprised us with its delicate texture and aromatic bouquet — jasmine, mango, clementine. It’s complex and adaptable. Pair with roasted vegetables, fried seafood, or Indian curries.

Pullus Haložan Orange – 1L
Gomez has a love-hate relationship with orange wine, but this one’s a gem. Hats off to Slovenia, who’s been making orange wine for centuries. Nutty and floral, with hints of marmalade and honey, this wine is unique without being challenging. Grab a liter, and share it with a pal.

Ercole Piedmont Rosato – 1L
Refreshing Italian rosé with watermelon and strawberry notes? And in a liter bottle? Yes, please. It’s everywhere and always a good move. If you’re craving red, Ercole also makes a 1-liter Barbera at the same price. Chill it slightly and forget the rules — reds are fine in summer, too.
