There was a time that you could easily assume anyone who had heard the name Rhiannon Giddens had heard it due to her status as founder and frontwoman for North Carolina old-time string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. However, over the past couple of years, Giddens has been up to a whole lot besides fronting her longtime band, and all of it is serving to demonstrate her wide-ranging talent.

There was a time that you could easily assume anyone who had heard the name Rhiannon Giddens had heard it due to her status as founder and frontwoman for North Carolina old-time string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. However, over the past couple of years, Giddens has been up to a whole lot besides fronting her longtime band, and all of it is serving to demonstrate her wide-ranging talent.
Giddens first attracted widespread attention for her solo work with a standout performance at the T-Bone Burnett-curated concert Another Day, Another Time, a celebration of the early-60s NYC-centered folk revival that inspired the Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. At that show, Giddens’ solo performance of the Odetta tune “Waterboy” so impressed Burnett that he sought out Giddens to produce a solo album for her. Two years later in February 2015, the resulting album, Tomorrow Is My Turn, was released on Nonesuch Records. The album includes a performance of “Waterboy,” and you can see Giddens and her backing band impress David Letterman and his rapt Late Show audience with a recent performance of that song below:
Between her brand new solo album, her recent inclusion along with Elvis Costello, Jim James, Marcus Mumford and more in the landmark Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes project, and the continued excellence of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, there are a lot of reasons to be stoked that Rhiannon Giddens will be coming to DC. She’ll be hitting the stage at the Lincoln Theatre this Sunday night–it is highly recommended that you be there.
