Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound – When Sweet Sleep Returned (Tee Pee Records)
Swooshy, swirly psychedelic epics with tendencies in the hippie rather than the heavy directions. Guitars are jangly rather than distorted, and vocals feature the male-female group singing that characterized early Jefferson Airplane. Plenty of relaxed tempos and hazy, gorgeous melodies to be found here. Excellent stoner blissout music.

Cave – Pure Moods (Drag City)
Acid-soaked single-chord drone over which inscrutable phrases are chanted. The instrumentation is post-hippie jam band, but the riffing is pure Krautrock. Reminds me of the Grateful Dead playing Can covers–and I mean that as a complement. Turn on the lava lamp for this one.

Ceremony – Rocket Fire (Killer Pimp)
Not the Ceremony I reviewed two weeks ago–this is a Fredericksburg-based two-piece who play fuzzed-out guitar riffs over drum machine beats. Shoegaze is definitely the word, but in the discordant feedback-laced spirit of early Jesus And Mary Chain. Punk noise plus pop melodies equals bliss.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
