ICA at VCU Celebrates 5 Years of Challenging The Conversation

by | Apr 19, 2023 | ART, MUSEUM & GALLERY NEWS, RICHMOND NEWS

Friday, April 21st is the 5th anniversary of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University (ICA at VCU). Designed by Steven Holl Architects, this iconic arts center has evolved into a creative hub for Richmond, Virginia, showcasing cutting-edge exhibitions, performances, films, and special programs that challenge and inspire. The ICA at VCU has helped transform the city’s understanding of contemporary art, creating dialogue and collaboration across the region that reaches around the world.

The ICA has been a cornerstone of Richmond’s artistic community since its opening in 2018. From the striking zinc and translucent glass exterior to the sweeping grand staircase, the building’s innovative design has garnered international attention. Named one of Architectural Digest’s “12 Most Anticipated Buildings of 2018,” the ICA has become an emblem of Richmond’s new cultural identity.

Throughout its five-year history, the ICA has commissioned works from a diverse range of artists and performers, including Nidaa Badwan, Tania Bruguera, Chim Pom, and GWAR. These collaborations have challenged boundaries and expanded our understanding of what art can be. With exhibitions like Declaration and So it appears, the ICA has fostered creativity and imagination, and with projects like MURRMUR, the institute continues to redefine our relationship with art, reading, and publishing.

The celebration will feature a visual history of the ICA’s development, with a conversation between architect Steven Holl, project architect Dimitra Tsachrelia, ICA Executive Director Dominic Asmall Willsdon, and other key figures. Attendees can also engage in interactive programs like MURRMUR, a series of events that explore collective reading and publishing, and new commissions such as Sam Taylor’s Materials Library, nicole killian’s between a book and a soft place, and Riley Hooker’s SIT(UATION).

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Review | BLKS is a Mixed Bag at Richmond Triangle Players

I often come off like a chihuahua on sugar pills when reviewing plays for this magazine. I am excitable, yes, but never in the service of idle flattery. I also take no joy in being critical of people’s hard work. I’ve said this whole thing before several times, but I...

Review | Dog Mom is Theatre at Its Best, Here or Anywhere Else

There are days of doing this when I just get to gush. Today is one of those days.  I have had the pleasure this past year of witnessing some of the best theatre of my life. VA Rep’s Primary Trust floored me. Richmond Shakespeare continued their epic run of hits...

Studio Two Three Is Beefing With Bots. Among Other Things

Studio Two Three has been around long enough to forget how likely it was to fail. Sixteen years ago, a small group of friends wanted to keep making art in Richmond. They pooled money from working in local restaurants to pay rent, borrowed equipment and built an...

Richmond Got a Little Filthier. John Waters Was Here.

Monday night I got taken to a church of filth. The Pope of Trash, the Prince of Puke, the Sultan of Sleaze, John Waters, graced the Byrd Theatre for a sold-out one-man show. The actor, writer and director became famous for cult classics like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray...

Review | Virginia Rep Gets Everything Wrong, and It’s Hilarious

Okay, I wasn’t prepared for the complete gut-busting insanity of The Play That Goes Wrong at Virginia Repertory Theatre’s November Theatre. Before heading to the Iron Blossom Festival this past Sunday, I caught a matinee. I didn’t know much about this play other than...
