Sound Check! Destructo Disk, Three Sheets To The Wind and Cellar Dwellers

by | Dec 26, 2024 | DOWNTOWN RVA, FESTIVALS & PARTIES, METAL, PUNK, THRASH & HARDCORE, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, POP & TOP 40, ROCK & INDIE

2024 comes to a sweet end. Some years you eagerly await the change of that last number, but I feel a bit bittersweet leaving that 4 behind. There has been such amazing music poured out all year, I suppose I can only let it inspire me and bring hope for the next one.

Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com

This is a show that has been on my radar since it was announced. This local benefit features some really great acts that I love as well as some that are a bit newer to me.

Destructo Disk is not quite skate punk, but it’s punk to skate to. Their newest EP is definitely going to be getting some more spins on my end over the next few months. Human Worm is one of those new-to-me groups I mentioned. Their single “Mega Bitch” immediately caught my attention, with perfectly tuned matching vocals and a super catchy beat. I really can’t wait to see it live. I have been trying to see Ultra Bleach again after catching them at the Warehouse a few months ago. They are my absolute perfect blend of dancey, aggressive, fun, with one of the best front people I have ever seen. The Glares are another one that I absolutely adore. They are one of the most authentic groups, and it strengthens their music so much. The two members are both incredible musicians and even better performers. This is my first time with Oh Devil and I am a big fan. It reminds me of a lot of the alternative music I grew up listening to, like Together Pangea and The Orwells. BUY TICKETS

The Camel
NEW YEARS EVE
Celler Dwellers, Nancy Raygun, Bucko, Flatspot

Celler Dwellers is back crooning us late into a new millennium at the Camel. Their indie sound is so defining of this era. If you are not already a fan, I think they really hit home with friends of Summer Salt and Strawberry Guy. There is something so enduring and honest in that bouncy clean guitar. This is the type of music that endlessly played when I was 16 and 17, music that made you feel like you are in a coming of age movie, like you are in a summer that is never going to end.

Nancy Raygun and Bucko have both had an exceptional year, and have both put out some amazing releases that deserve to be listened to over and over again.

Flatspot’s first release was called “songs to slow dance to” and I think that is a great sum up of them. While it may not be all slow dances, take the hand of someone you love and give ’em a spin to Flatspot.

The Broadberry
NEW YEARS EVE
Three Sheets to the Wind

Sail into the New Year smooth and easy at The Broadberry with Three Sheets to the Wind, America’s undisputed yacht rock royalty. Sure, it might be a chilly night here in RVA, but this band is all about turning up the heat and taking you straight to a breezy beachside paradise. From soft rock classics to yacht rock anthems that will have you singing along, Three Sheets to the Wind knows how to set the perfect vibe.

Why freeze outside when you can soak up the warm, easygoing energy and toast the New Year in style? Grab your tickets, dust off your finest captain’s hat, and get ready for a night of silky grooves and carefree fun. BUY TICKETS

Get Tight Lounge
NEW YEARS EVE
NYE 1992

You know how in January you’re always scribbling the wrong year? Well, let’s lean into the chaos and rewind it even further—straight to 1992. Get Tight Lounge is throwing the ultimate throwback New Year’s Eve bash, and they’re bringing the best of the ‘90s to life.

Picture this: spot-on tributes to Prince, The Lemonheads, Soundgarden, Tom Waits, and Alan Jackson sharing the stage like it’s your ultimate mixtape come to life. And if that wasn’t enough, Hip Hop Henry will be spinning a set packed with all the ‘90s hits you forgot you loved. From grunge and alt-rock to country and hip-hop classics, this lineup hits all the nostalgic sweet spots.

So, grab your flannel, shine up those cowboy boots, or just bring your best throwback vibes. What better way to kick off 2025 than dancing the night away like it’s 1992? This one’s gonna be a good time—don’t miss it.
