RVA noise-rockers Hoax Hunters have been building up to the release of their debut full-length, Comfort & Safety, for quite a while, but the wait is almost over–the album will hit the streets next Tuesday, August 5. A record release show at Gallery 5 on August 8 will follow hot on the release date’s heels. To tide us over until that day comes, they’ve supplied RVA Mag with an exclusive stream of a brand new track from the LP, entitled “Breathe.” Let’s listen to it now:

Pretty excellent, right? The song’s less aggro verses vaguely remind me of Yo La Tengo in their early days, but the heavier moments are straight-up punk rock, with harsh distortion on the guitars and a driving, propulsive backbeat supplied by the rhythm section of James O’Neill (drums) and Tim Falen (bass). Frontman PJ Sykes is still the driving force behind this band, though, and it’s to his credit that the guitars get so rough and rowdy on this excellent track, which if anything is over too soon.

You’ll hear plenty more where this came from in the near future, though, and if you just can’t wait to get your grubby little mitts on your own copy of Comfort & Safety, you’re in luck: the album can be pre-ordered from Negative Fun Records right here for only $12. Vinyl comes in your choice of blue or black, though I can’t imagine anyone would pick black when snazzy blue vinyl is available. You do have that opportunity, though, if that’s your bag. For the record, digital formats of the album will be handled through Sykes’s label, Cherub Records; it isn’t up yet, but the album should appear on Cherub’s Bandcamp page next week.

Or, if you want to dispense with all this internet foolishness and get your copy in person by handing cash to someone standing behind a table, you can do that, AND see Hoax Hunters performing live (bonus!) at the Comfort & Safety record release show, taking place on Friday, August 8 at Gallery 5. Hoax Hunters will be joined on the bill by Dave Watkins and Positive No, and admission is $5. Doors open at 7 PM–for more info, click here.
