A Guide To Celebrating the Confluence of IPA Day and Virginia Craft Beer Month With Local Craft Breweries

by | Aug 7, 2014 | EAT DRINK

Sometimes it seems like RVA’s craft beer scene is growing so quickly that we must be heading for some sort of inevitable critical mass, in which the entire city is drowned beneath 60-foot-high amber waves of golden hoppy deliciousness. Best apocalypse ever! But until that day of reckoning comes, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy tasty, locally brewed beverages–so why not take advantage of them?

Sometimes it seems like RVA’s craft beer scene is growing so quickly that we must be heading for some sort of inevitable critical mass, in which the entire city is drowned beneath 60-foot-high amber waves of golden hoppy deliciousness. Best apocalypse ever! But until that day of reckoning comes, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy tasty, locally brewed beverages–so why not take advantage of them? Today brings a sort of double whammy to lovers of craft beer, for not only is it day 7 of Virginia Craft Beer Month, it is also International IPA Day. This celebration of the much-beloved India Pale Ale is not affiliated with one particular brewery or marketing firm, but instead offers all beer lovers the opportunity to celebrate the independent culture of craft brewing through celebration of one of its best-loved varieties.

Several local breweries have specific events planned for this afternoon and evening to celebrate IPA Day, and since it’s Thursday and therefore practically the weekend already, you have no reason not to partake in one or more of the following festivities:

Yippie-Ki-IPA Day at Strangeways Brewing: The official mascot for this event is apparently John McClane from Die Hard. I can get down with that. Here’s some info about what’s going on:

Yippee-Ki-IPA Day returns in celebration of National IPA Day, International Beer Day, and the first day of Virgina Craft Beer Month! Get great specials on at least 6 different special IPA offerings and discounted growler fills on any IPA. ALSO, purchase any 3 tasters and get the TASTING GOBLET FOR FREE (limit one per person).

This all kicks off at 4 PM today at Strangeways Brewing, located at 2277A Dabney Rd. For more info, click here. [Also, International Beer Day is today too? Peak Beer must surely be approaching!]

Pocahoptas Yeast Study at Center Of The Universe Brewing: Center of the Universe is dedicating their celebration of IPA Day to their Pocahoptas IPA. Some details from the brewers:

Ever wonder how much influence a yeast strain has on a beer? Let us school you. We did 3 different batches of Pocahoptas using 3 different yeast strains; London Ale, Pacific, and a Belgian Golden yeast strain. You will be able to try all 3 and compare them to the ever delicious original Pocahoptas.

This taste adventure is taking place today starting at 4 PM at Center Of The Universe Brewing, located at 11293 Air Park Rd in Ashland. You’ve ostensibly got 5 hours to get there, but early arrival seems wise, as quantities of the special IPA varieties are limited. For more info, click here.

IPA Day at Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery: Things aren’t getting too fancy at Lickinghole Creek, but they’ve got something going on, for sure:

We’re celebrating National IPA Day with 3 IPAs available in the Tasting Room.

We will be pouring:
‘Til Sunset Session IPA 4.7% ABV 45 IBU
Four Pillars DIPA 7.5% 75 IBU
Nuclear Nugget Imperial Honey IPA 10.5% 105 IBU

This is happening today between 4 and 8:30 at Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, located at 4100 Knolls Point Drive in Goochland. For more info, click here.

Virginia IPA Invasion at Joe’s Inn: Joe’s is firmly embracing the possibility of the doubled-up beer holidays:

We will be tapping 8 delicious VIRGINIA beers! The list is Hardwood Great Return IPA, Hardywood Bourbon DIPA, Ardent IPA, Triple Crossing IPA (first ever release), Licking Hole Creek Til Sunset IPA, Starr Hill King of Hop IPA, Potters Hop Cider, and Blue Mountain Prizefighter!!

Their enthusiasm is contagious, so join in by showing up at Joe’s Inn today at 5 PM! For more info, click here.

IPA Day may be over in less than 12 hours, but Virginia Craft Beer Month carries on for the rest of August, so there’s plenty more left to enjoy before it all wraps up. Therefore, beer drinkers of RVA, unite! You have nothing to lose but your sobriety!
