What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?!

What’s happening craft beer lovers of RVA?! Welcome to this week’s “Tapped,” RVA Magazine’s go to weekly craft beer column where you can find all your craft beer-related events, releases, festivals and all the booze news your little hearts desire.

Our cup is overflowing with news this week, but first head over here to check out what awesome brews were released in Richmond last weekend.

We’ve got a ton of new releases, including a beer/Vermouth release, and a few festivals so hold on to your mugs because we’re about to tap this thing!

This Saturday, Hardywood will release its Rye Barrel Bock, a traditional German-style bock beer that’s aged in freshly emptied rye whiskey barrels for eight weeks. Rye Barrel Bock is light and clean, with notes of sweet caramel at it’s core.

Garden Grove Brewing Company will release “Criminal Mischief”, a collaboration brew with the Roosevelt’s T Leggett that brings a unique twist to craft Vermouth this Sunday May 15th. This “beer-mouth” was brewed with an assortment of locally grown ingredients (aronia berry, rosemary, lemon thyme) and botanicals from around the globe (bitter orange, chamomile, vanilla, hibiscus flowers, juniper berries, coriander, fresh Valencia orange peel); along with an addition of Cabernet Franc grapes grown by Naked Mountain Winery & Vineyard in Markham, VA. Criminal Mischief will be on tap for a few weeks at the brewery.

Ardent Craft Ales has collaborated with Stone Brewing to make a version of their Arrogant Bastard, an “RVA edition” which will be released this Saturday.

On Friday, Isley Brewing will release its weekly infusion, this time they’ll be pouring a Grapefruit Gose. Only 1 keg!

Isley will also bring back Wolfman’s Other Brother IPA on Saturday. This newest IPA is light-colored in body and brewed to feature Australian Motueka. The OTHER Brother has a big, juicy hop flavor with a well-balanced bitterness.

The brewery’s biggest event this weekend is their inaugural Spring Festival, presented by Radio Rubber Room events. The festival will feature 11 brews, four bands, two food trucks and beer trucks on their back patio. 2-9 pm. Free.

On Sunday, Isley Brewing will wrap up their whirlwind weekend with a brunch with Ellwood Thompson’s. Tickets are $16/ADV $20/Door and include a plate of Eggs, Potatoes, Fruit, a Muffin and one Beer Mimosa or Beer Bloody Mary. 12pm-4pm

Center of the Universe in Ashland will host the best kind of event this weekend in my opinion, a pickle festival. Join them this Saturday, for the first annual “Pickled and Fermented” a festival of all things pickled. Enjoy pickles, kimchi, kraut and a special beer, Pickle Gose Ale to wash it all down. There will be pickle tastings, pickle vendors, live music and a pickle competition. 1 pm.

And this one is a little farther away, but we thought it was a cool event for you to check out! Smartmouth Beer in Norfolk is hosting its 3rd annual Spring Street Party this Saturday, May 14th. They’re shutting down Raleigh Avenue to host the party and plan to release a refreshing German-style kolsch alongside with over 30 flowing taps of your favorite Smartmouth brews. There will be tons of food as well! Free. 12-7pm.

And no, it’s not made from oranges.. The first time I encountered orange wine (or skin contact white wine), I was wowed by the color and it’s presentation. It’s gorgeous. This beautiful, amber-hued liquid danced around the edges of my swirling wine glass. I gave it a...
