Introducing Chance Fischer

by | Aug 12, 2010 | MUSIC

Richmond native Chance Fischer (shown here as Mars Blackmon) has put out a mixtape that is getting mad love up north and we are pleased to be passing this along to the hip-hop heads in RVA. The production is excellent and the kid has a sound that harkens back but is still oven-fresh. The opening track “HERE” makes an old man feel good. Check it out.

THE BIO:
It’s hard work being an Ivy League student, musician, and an aspiring hotelier. So it’s no wonder Chance Fischer has a lot on his plate. A a rising senior in the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, Chance has been trying to balance schoolwork, student government, a band, and numerous studio sessions.

Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Chance was reluctant to start a career in rap. He feared that he would not be able to transcend the southern rap paradigm. During his sophomore year in college, he decided to pick up the mic and do a few tracks with a fellow recording artist by the name of Sloppy Joe. He was well-received by listeners, and after some coercion from friends he decided to pursue a career in music wholeheartedly.

He is working on his first project entitled “HERE” which is set to be released later this month. The mixtape chronicles the trials and triumphs of his life over the past 3 years – drama, stress, soul-searching, parties, and the difficulty of relationships..

When he is not in the studio, Chance is either hitting the books or doing shows with his band After Six. He lives by the words of Lao Tzu , “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with one step.” He is taking the first steps of his journey through the pathway of music.

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is. Photos | Maynard James Keenan and the Sessanta Tour in Virginia

A few weeks ago, we talked to Maynard James Keenan about the Sessanta tour — this strange, layered fever dream of a show stitched together with parts of A Perfect Circle, Tool, and Primus. When asked what it all meant, he didn’t blink. “You just do,” he said. No big...

Why Shera Shi’s Debut Refuses to Fit One Genre

The first time I saw Shera Shi was after stepping back into Richmond’s music scene, following a few years away during the quarantine-era shutdown. One of the best things about catching live music in RVA is stumbling onto “new to you” bands while showing up for the...
