TONIGHT: Beast Patrol, Fire Bison & Herro Sugar At Strange Matter!

by | Jun 29, 2012 | MUSIC

Good show happening at Strange Matter tonight! Beast Patrol are a NYC quartet who bring an excellent high-fashion sensibility to 90s-era alternative/new wave revivalism, as can be seen in their excellent videos for tracks like “Plaster” and “Tricks.” Check out the clip for “Tricks,” directed by Phil Knott, below!

Fire Bison and Herro Sugar are local groups who are generating a lot of buzz lately in indie rock circles, and if you read this website regularly, you already know who both of them are. Fire Bison feature two powerful women, guitarist Adrienne Shurte and bassist Laurie Lay, up front slinging guitars and rocking the Fugazi-ish post-hardcore stylings, while drummer Wess Brockman keeps a solid, heavy beat. Herro Sugar are a bunch of young teenagers who are either still in high school or fresh out, and they’ve got a great IRS-era REM sound with an added modern sensibility that’s obviously attributed to their youthful idealism. Both of these local bands will rock the house in fine fashion, paving the way for Beast Patrol to bring it all home for their first appearance in RVA! It all starts at 8 PM tonight, at Strange Matter, located at 929 W. Grace St! Check out the event page HERE for more info, and we’ll see you there!

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
